Casting Call for MKX Digital Series Reveals New Characters?

by Gambid on Jan 10, 2015 :: 0
Several months ago Warner Bros. announced its newly formed Blue Ribbon Content, a division, which will develop and produce live-action and animated series for digital platforms. A slate of content under the banner was also revealed. Part of it was an untitled Mortsl Kombat series:

An untitled “Mortal Kombat” series — The next generation in the Mortal Kombat franchise to be released in association with the upcoming “Mortal Kombat X” videogame, slated to bow April 14, 2015. Blue Ribbon Content and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment are teaming on the series, which will showcase some of the franchise’s popular characters and introduce a new generation of fighters.

Since then nothing has really been revealed about the series, until fellow Mortal Kombat fan site TRMK.org came across a casting call list for the series. The list reveals several characters for the series and leave us wondering whether they will appear in the game or not. The list include:

[ BO' RAI' CHO ]
50s-60s — ANY ETHNICITY - This drunken man tells Jin that he will show him the way to the Shaolin academy, for a small price. He is affable and appears harmless. However, later we see that he is an expert fighter, and no fool. He reveals himself to be Bo Rai Cho, the master of Wu Shi. He leads Jin to the We Shi Academy. He is a rotund man with healthy appetites and never without a drink. He teaches with every opportunity and has taught several great warriors, including Liu Kang, and Kung Lao at the We Shi Academy. Bo Rai Cho originates from Outworld but has not, however, participated in a Mortal Kombat tournament, knowing that if he wins, his victory would be in the name of Shao Kahn for his status as an Outworlder. So he instead chose to utilize his fighting skills to train Earthrealm warriors...LEAD

[ DVORAH ]
Female, Ate 20s early 30s, bug-like articulation. Dvorah is of a sentient colonial race called the Kytinn, which populates the island realm of Arnyek. The solitary nature of the Kytinn meant a common defense of their realm was nonexistent; thus it was conquered and merged with Outworld by Shoo Kahn. Dvorah's loyalty and insightfulness, unusual traits for a Kytinn, led to her quick political toe. Soon she found herself among the emperor's closest advisers. She serves the current ruler of Outworld, Kota! Kahn...LEAD

[ SCORPION AKA HANZO HASASHI ]
In his 30s to 40s, angry, tortured, and tough, Hanzo is a Ninja master. Hanzo was a member of the Shirai-Rya clan until they and his family were killed by Sub-Zero of the rival Lin Kuei clan. Hanzo's soul was claimed by the Netherrealm sorcerer Quan Chi, who resurrected him as the revenant Scorpion and gave him the chance to avenge his family's deaths. Full of rage and hellfire, Scorpion fights alongside Quan Chi in Netherrealm's invasion of Earthrealm...LEAD

[ TAKEDA ]
In his mid 20s, quiet and mild-mannered, but with an angry streak, he is the "nice" one of the group. He is a world-class swordsman and he is adept at telepathy and telekinesis. Takahashi Takeda is the son of the hero Kenshi and a young Thai-American woman named Suchin, whom Kenshi met during his travels. When Suchin passed away, Kenshi was shocked to learn he had had an eight¬year-old son with her. He took Takeda to Hanzo Hasashi, the former Scorpion, to be instructed in the Martial Arts. Takeda had no contact with his father for many years, until the day he was to leave Hanzo's tutelage. Kenshi revealed that he had left Takeda with Hanzo to protect him from his mother's murderer. Despite this revelation, and subsequent reconciliation with Kenshi, Takeda has abandonment issues yet to overcome—which makes working with his father in Johnny Cage's Special Forces team a challenge at times...LEAD

[ SALAZAR ]
In his 30s to 40s, quiet, reserved, downcast, he is a mercenary in the service of the Emperor. Intelligent and eloquent, he sounds like he may be American. Salazar's exact origins are unknown. Born on Earth, he somehow found himself in Outworld. There he spent years wandering its vast territories, selling his amazing weaponry skills to local warlords. Now in the employ of the emperor, Kotal Kahn, Salazar shows no inclination to return to Earthrealm—or aid them in their present struggles...LEAD

[ KUNG JIN ]
In his mid 20s, with a slight Asian accent, Kung Jin is the younger cousin of the Earthrealm hero Kung Lao. He is cerebral but streetwise. He is American in speech patterns/idioms. When Kung Lao was killed in the war against Outworld, Kung's family's fortunes took a turn for the worse. He journeyed to the U.S. and became a thief. An encounter with Raiden changed Jin's outlook, and he joined the Shaolin monks. Now a member of Johnny Cage's secret Special Forces offshoot, Jin's streetwise past provides him extra insight into the minds and motivations of those who would harm Earthrealm...LEAD

[ RON TAN' CHO ]
Male, 45-60. Asian. Ron Tan' Cho is an underground crirne boss. He does what he wants, takes what he wants & always get what he wants. He has one wicked smile that if shown to you means trouble. He enjoys toying with his enemies & seeing the fear on their faces. DVorah attempts to attack him, and she fails due to his Goons apprehending her. LEAD

Interview With MKX Comic Book Writer Shawn Kittelsen

by Gambid on Jan 6, 2015 :: 1
Shortly before the holidays we sat down with Mortal Kombat X Comic Books writer Shawn Kittelsen and talked about the return of the Mortal Kombat franchise to the world of comic books:
Mortal Kombat X Comic Books Writer Shawn Kittelsen Interview
From the interview:

These books are intended to be canonical and compatible with the games, in order to create that more immersive narrative. We didn’t start on scripts until we had NetherRealm’s approval on the outline, and in the outline process we had deep, deep discussions about what worked, what didn’t, and why.
...

Mortal Kombat X Comic Book Digital Issue 01 Cover

I personally did a ton of homework, including watching all nine episodes of the MK Secrets “History of Mortal Kombat” on YouTube. Seriously!
...
Relative to the game, there are 25 years between MK9 and MKX, and most of our comics take place several years in, with some flashbacks here and there. We’re not retreading the MKX Story Mode. If you read the comics alone, you’ll get a full story. Play the game alone, you’ll get a full story. But when you combine the comics with the game, you’ll become immersed in a bigger, more complex world with a deeper understanding of the characters.

You can read the entire interview here and learn tons of interesting information about the series.

At this point we would like to say thanks to Shawn Kittelsen for taking the time to answer our questions and DC Entertainment for making it possible. We will them a huge success with the new series and promise to follow them every step of the way.

New Year, New Character: Kung Lao Returns in Mortal Kombat X

by Gambid on Jan 1, 2015 :: 3
It have been three months since the latest Mortal Kombat X character announcement and even though this is not the official announcement of a new character, the Finnish gaming magazine Pelaaja has revealed that Kung Lao will be joining the roster of playable Mortal Kombat X characters. The latest issue of the magazine contains an exclusive article with information and screenshots of the Shaolin Monk, who was killed in Mortal Kombat 9 (2011) by Shao Kahn himself:
Mortal Kombat X Pelaaja Magazine Leaks Kung Lao 01 Mortal Kombat X Pelaaja Magazine Leaks Kung Lao 02 Mortal Kombat X Pelaaja Magazine Leaks Kung Lao 03 Mortal Kombat X Pelaaja Magazine Leaks Kung Lao 04 Mortal Kombat X Pelaaja Magazine Leaks Kung Lao 05
AeroGrunt has translated part of the article over at the TestYourMight Forums. Take a look:

"Unfortunately we couldn't get to play the story mode yet at the studio visit, but the game's story jumps 25 or so years into the future from where MK9 ended. From what we've seen and heard the ruler of the Outworld is now Kotal Khan and Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade have a daughter called Cassie. Even Scorpion has a new Sub Zero to face off against. The biggest question mark right now must be Kung Lao, who has proudly aged and seems to have escaped the last game's ending."

"Good old hat-thrower is how ever fully playable with the rest of the released characters and according to Ed Boon is one of the most diverse fighters in the game. Like the other characters he has three different playable variations, each one bringing new tricks into the gameplay."

"The differences between Kung Lao's Tempest-, Buzz Saw- and Hat Trick -variations happen to be the biggest ones yet. With Tempest Kung Lao uses more spinning attacks and has the ability to set his hat to spin around him as a shield of sorts. In his Buzz Saw variation his hat is sharpened with razor blade edges and allows the player to control his hat throws more. Hat Trick is the most experimental of the three, because you can throw and call back your hat at any point you want. This keeps the opponent on their toes, because the hat can extend combos."

"If bugs or glitches would appear in Mortal Kombat X, it has the same automatic update system from Injustice that allows for hotfixes."

"Ed Boon guarantees, that the online features are much more complex this time around. For example when you start the game you get to choose your own alliance from five different options: Lin Kuei, White Lotus, Brotherhood of Shadows, Special Force and Black Dragon. Basically each team gathers so called "battle points" for their team, which decides how the game's menus look both in single and multiplayer. This way each player contributes to the entirety whether or not you prefer the social aspects or playing by yourself."

"Even more diverse content is promised, for the challenge tower is making it's return. This time around the towers and their challenges change constantly, even by the hour."

We are still expecting an official announcement and a trailer from Netherrealm Studios.

Mortal Kombat Legacy Season 3
It doesn't matter that the third season of Mortal Kombat: Legacy neither has an official announcement nor an official release date as all other indications are pointing towards its ongoing production with actors tweeting and posting pictures from their training sessions and with the recent release of season 2 on DVD and Blu Ray. Whether the release of Season 3 will be tied to the release of the game is still unknown and as the time passes highly unlikely. But we are highly optimistic that we will see the third season this year.

The History of Mortal Kombat Episode 10
The production of our own YouTube Series The History of Mortal Kombat has been on halt for quite some time now but rest assured that it has not been stopped. Even though we can't give you a release date for the next episode, the series will be continued this year. In case you haven't watched it, you can find all available episodes in our The History of Mortal Kombat section. Here is episode 09:
The Unknown Future

And if all of this isn't enough, here is what we thing might also happen in the near future.

With the release of Mortal Kombat X on the next generation of consoles and with these gathering more and more popularity a release of Mortal Kombat: Arcade Kollection for XBox One and PS4 seems to us like a logical next step for the franchise. And if we dare dreaming today, we would also like to see an enhanced version of Mortal Kombat 9 (2011)Mortal Kombat 9 (2011) for the new consoles. But we don't think that all this is possible in one year, but who knows, may be down the road at some point.

For now, enjoy the holidays and prepare for MORTAL KOMBAT!!!
