The E3 2010 Update Part 2

by Gambid on Jun 21, 2010 :: 0
The fact that E3 is over doesn't necessarily mean the end of the information. On the contrary, a lot of new things including reviews, interviews and movies might appear online even a couple of days after the expo has closed its doors.

So let's see what new stuff is out there:

Probably one of the biggest news is GameSpot's E3 2010 Stage Demo: Mortal Kombat, a video interview with Ed Boon with a demonstration of the game, during which you can see the new select screen in a lot better quality, a lot of gameplay footage that includes Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Reptile, Sektor, Kung Lao, Johnny Cage, Mileena and Nightwolf. Here is the video:
If you want to only see the Fatalities from the clips, then there they are:

Now for those of you who prefer to look at the things in detail, we have 50 still images from the gameplay footage. We grabbed of course the most interesting moments:

Another great news comes from our affiliate Total Mortal Kombat who had the chance to take an amazing interview from Ed Boon. The video is now online so hurry up and watch it, right here.

Another two great interviews come from GiantBomb and Destructoid. Watch them here:

The E3 2010 Updates

by Gambid on Jun 16, 2010 :: 3
Now this is going to take a while. We have so much things we want to tell you about. The information, the multimedia and the enthusiasms are all flying around ever since this year's E3 opened its doors. The fact that the new Mortal Kombat was not playable for everyone didn't stop the fans to get what they want, tons of information. In fact if I start publishing the separate stories the first one will land of the main page, before I have finished with the last one. This is why I will post everything in one huge news article and I will publish as I write, so keep pressing F5.

Lets start:

Rigo Cortes, the Community Manager of Netherrealm Studios posted one more image of the Mortal Kombat booth at E3:
Image
A lot of information about the game has been uncovered during E3. Scorpion for once has finally made his appearance and ended the worries of many fans about not being included in the game. I hope that we will now stop receiving Mails, PMs, YouTube and Skype messages from worried and/or angry fans who asked why he is not in the game, because well... he is.

A beta version of the select screen of the game has been shown at E3. The select screen contains 26 character boxes + 1 random box + 1 box for DLC. If you sum the number of the fighters in the games Mortal Kombat 1 - Mortal Kombat 3 you will get a number near 26 (+ 1 or 2, because there might be a discussion about several character). And with Ed Boon confirming that the team is focusing on the Mortal Kombat 1 - Mortal Kombat 3 characters I believe we already know who most of the characters in the game are going to be. But, Scorpion is currently the only newly confirmed character.

The following two screenshots appeared on the Internet, confirming everything I just wrote. The original source of the images remains unknown to us (if you are reading this, contact us, and we will give you the deserved kredit). The Main Menu screenshot first appeared on Russian Mortal Kombat fan site MK Server while the one with the select screen was first shown on fellow Italian Mortal Kombat site and our affiliate Inside MK. The version of the screenshots that you see on our site is slightly different, because I allowed myself to enhance them, by correcting size, proportions, colors, ... for your viewing pleasure. So enjoy:

The characters that you can see on the Select screen are: Scorpion, Mileena, Reptile, Sub-Zero, Kung Lao, Johnny Cage, Nightwolf and Sektor.

The Story

During an interview made by GameSpot Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon reveals a lot new details and gives important information on the story line of the game. This will start at the end of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon and will involve time travel and a lot of the events from the first three Mortal Kombat games will be retold. But see it for yourself:
Video no longer available!
Click here to read GameSpot's Hands-On article. In another preview, this time from IGN a lot more details are given about the story and the Super bar. From the article:

We're also talking about a new take on the series' story. "Mortal Kombat has this timeline - eighteen years of making games, and we really didn't want to just continue, like, chapter seventeen of the whole story," says Ed Boon, the co-creator of the series. "So we're kind of doing a Back to the Future type of thing, where Raiden is about to be killed by Shao Kahn, and just before he delivers the last blow, he sends a mental message to his earlier self, so the camera rewinds back to Mortal Kombat 1. The Raiden from back then gets a message and he doesn't know what's going on, but he knows something bad's going to happen, and the game spans Mortal Kombat 1, 2 and 3, retelling the story with an enlightened Raiden, and he's changing the course of things, so everything you've seen happen before – Liu Kang winning, the guys turning into cybernetic ninjas, are changed around, so you might see a character become cybernetic who wasn't before, and so you see a different version [of events]."

Sounds interesting, doesn't it. lets see now what the preview has to say about the Super Bar and a new X-Ray feature:

Powering the gameplay system is a Super meter that functions much as you'd expect. It's a three segment bar, and different moves use different numbers of segments. An enhanced special, for instance, uses a single segment. Enhancing a super basically gives it more oomph. Reptile's slimy green projectile gets much larger, while Kung Lao's spinning hat changes from horizontal to vertical, embedding itself in his opponent's chest.

The Super bar also ties into tag team. In tag team games you can instantly swap with a partner, or you can tag them in to assist with an attack. You can do the former at any time, but the latter will cost you a segment. This stops people from abusing the system, but still leaves things open for crazy tag combos.

Of course, the real jewel in the crown of the Super system is that when it's full you have the chance to do an 'X-Ray attack' (this may not be the final name by the way – it's mostly descriptive at this point), where your character does a sequence of devastating slow motion punches and/or kicks, and the impacts are shown in x-ray vision. Y'know, so you can see the bones shatter.

The Super meter also helps players turn the tide of a battle. Sure, it builds whenever you do a special move, but it also builds when you take damage. So the more you're getting wailed on, the quicker you'll be able to respond with an X-Ray move.

The impressions of the others

We already gave you links to a couple of previews and hands-on, but now we continue exactly in this direction:

Visit the forums of our affiliate TRMK and read the impressions of a fan who was at E3.

Also click Wildgunmen to read the first fmpressions of Aaron Chatha over at Wildgunmen. A lot of interesting information and fatality images in this one.

Now, the Fatlities...

The Fatalities in the game are promised to be the most bloody and brutal ones and... they are.

The first complete Fatality that the fans were able to see was Kung Lao's Body Split Fatality. It was shown during Sony's presentation of the 3D games for PlayStation 3. Yep, the new Mortal Kombat will have a 3D mode on PlayStation 3. GameTrailers have the clip from the presentation on their website. Click here to watch it. To save you the time we cut just the Fatality and we can see it right here:
ScrewAttack has uploaded an amazing hands-on video that not only reveals some details about the game but shows the Fatalities for most of the currently announced characters. Here is the video:

Non E3 Stuff

The following two images are actually not from E3 but they are just as great as the info that we receive from the expo. Lets see them:
Image Image
The first image is from the next (239) issue of the returning Electronic Gaming Mounthly Magazine. it was originally posted here.

The second image is an image of the Pit 2 arena from the new Mortal Kombat. It was published on fellow Luxembourgian Mortal Kombat fan site Mortal Kombat Universe. Check it out.

Who is on E3

Unfortunately we couldn't be there due to a lot of different reasons. But two of our Affiliates are. Check the exclusive E3 coverage of:

Because it is one thing when you hear about the game from the press, but it is a whole other thing when you hear about it from a real fans.

Interview With MK: Rebirth's Jax' Michael Jai White

by Gambid on Jun 13, 2010 :: 0
Asylum has published an exclusive interview with actor Michael Jai White who played the role of Jackson Briggs in the recently released short Mortal Kombat: Rebirth. In the interview the actor from Spawn talks about his involvement in the first two feature films and in Mortal Kombat: Rebirth and explains how they were going to show Jax's Metal Arms in the short. Definitely a must read material for the fans of the short film. From the interview:
Finally Getting the Chance to Play Jax
I was connected to both previous "Mortal Kombat" films. I was supposed to play Jax, but had to pass because I was doing the Mike Tyson movie and "Spawn." They were shooting at the same time. My chance to finally walk in Jax's shoes in this really felt good. I'd love to do it as a movie.

Reinventing Jax for "Mortal Kombat: Rebirth"
Our natural take on it is to make it gritty and dark. Jax is still a hell of a fighter. He's still a super-badass, but he's just restrained by the letter of the law. We played with some ideas of building that up between him and Scorpion. That you're seeing two very powerful fighters, only Jax's hands are bound by the fact that he's an officer. He can't do what Scorpion can do. We have it pretty fleshed out on how we would take it.

Jax's Metal Arms
Jax still has his metal arms -- we just didn't show it there. We were playing with some ideas when my arm hits the table to have this reverberation effect.

There would be some great fights with Jax. There's so much I haven't had the chance to do. I've probably shown one-eighth of my martial arts ability on screen. I got the chance to do a little bit in "Undisputed II" and "Blood and Bone." But with something like Jax and fighting elite fighters, I'd get the chance to do a lot of things I haven't been able to do in other films. With Jax having his metal arms, I'd use a lot of Wing Chun because it relies heavily on the arms.

Will "Mortal Kombat: Rebirth" Become a Feature Film?
If Hollywood is cool enough to get on board. I think a movie of this type with a hard edge is what people want. I think this a reboot of the game itself. There was this fantasy world that people were used to, but now we're bringing it into another world. Just like how "Batman" was rebooted -- there was the fun, Joel Schumacher "Batman," and then there's the Christopher Nolan one. That same analogy works with "Mortal Kombat: Rebirth."
