The MK Franchise Has Reached New Sales Milestones [UPDATE]

by Roy Arkon on Jul 26, 2021 :: 0

Right before Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate has been released, Ed Boon confirmed that the previous game in the Mortal Kombat series, Mortal Kombat XL, has sold nearly 11 million copies, making it the best selling game in the history of the series. In October last year, Ed Boon also confirmed just before the Ultimate update for MK11U came out, that MK11U has sold 8 million copies worldwide.

Now it has been confirmed by Warner Bros. Games, as reported via GamePress, that MK11U not only surpassed it's previous sales number, but even MKXL's sales number, by hitting over 12 Million copies sold worldwide in less than two years and a quarter. On top of that, thanks to this gigantic milestone, the overall Mortal Kombat series has reached the astonishing amount of 73 million sales overall, and that also the Mortal Kombat Mobile app has reached 138 million downloads. And finally, the press release from WB Games also confirmed that millions of players still actively play MK games on both consoles and mobile platforms.

Ed Boon also gave his word on these incredible news:

“When Mortal Kombat launched nearly 30 years ago, I never dreamed it would grow into the franchise it is today with more than 73 million games sold. We have some of the most passionate fans in the world and we appreciate the support they have shown us over the years”.

And then Boon came in to Twitter to send a huge thanks to all of the MK fans who have supported over the years.

UPDATE:
Ed Boon came to Twitter once again to clarify an important detail, and that is despite the huge milestone of MK11U reaching 12 million copies sold, it's still not the best selling game in the series yet, which means that MKXL, as of this moment, is still the best selling MK ever, although exact current sales numbers for MKXL are yet to be given. Boon however did state that MK11U is on it's way to be the best selling MK game ever.

These are undeniably fantastic news for the Mortal Kombat franchise, which only keeps growing more and more over time. We will see what the future has in store for the series, but for now, let us all enjoy these gigantic milestones for the series.

MK11U Support Update - No Plans For Future Patches

by Roy Arkon on Jul 5, 2021 :: 0

As we reported a couple of days ago, it was confirmed by the official Mortal Kombat 11 Twitter Page that the support for Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate has come to an end. Yet it still wasn't fully clear if it's just regarding DLC characters or support in general, including balance patches.

Now we do have the answer, as Jonathan Andersen, a producer at NetheRealm Studios have stated via Twitter that there are no current plans for any MK11U patches.

He even went on several Tweets to clear other matters, such as that there is even no support for the Krypt or Kombat League, which means that there are not going to be any new Krypt events (although old ones will keep returning), and there are not going to be any Kombat League seasons after the 2nd rotation of seasons is over.

And in addition, there are plans for bug fixes either, since they are now focusing on their next project. That

Author's opinion: So now we have a clear answer. There is no question that COVID-19 is to blame for this, it really delayed so many things for so many companies, and in the gaming industry, or entertainment business in general really, timing is everything. The people working in that industry have deadlines upon deadlines upon deadlines, and combine that with AT&T considering splitting all WB Games Studios, including NRS, everything got delayed even further, and it's clear that WB Games would much rather for NRS to work on their next project as scheduled.

Despite all of this, however, MK11U is still the longest supported NRS/WB game ever. The game to have that the longest support before then was Mortal Kombat XL, which got it's final DLC update 10 months and a half after launch, with it's last support update coming just a year and a half after it's release. MK11U got it's last DLC update with the Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate after one year and 7 months, and it's last support update came just last May, over two years after the game out, at which point we would've already play the next NRS/WB game in line. And of course, with the Kombat League season rotation still intact, there is still more content to unlock as there are new Gear pieces, Brutalities and Kombat Kard items in each new season, and the 2nd rotation should at June of next year, at which point MK11U will be over 3 years old. And also, there are still new skins to unlock from time to time via the Race Against Time in the Towers of Time mode. So NRS/WB still lived up to their promise, very likely not to the extent that they initially planned, but they still made their promise. We can all of course still enjoy MK11U, as it surely is still an incredible game, and whatever is the next project from NRS/WB, it will surely be the same as that.

by Roy Arkon on Jul 2, 2021 :: 0

During the tourney, a YouTube channel called Hold Back to Block, which made fighting game related documentaries such as the Killer Instinct documentary, has worked in collaboration with the MKXL Lives organizers to make another documentary, this time focusing on MKXL. Clips of the documentary were shown throughout the whole event, featuring Ed Boon, Tyler Lansdown and Mike Stallone (director of technology in NetherRealm Studios), talking about various topics regarding MKXL such as the introduction of the Variation system, the implementation of the rollback netcode, the addition of guest characters and more.

Now the the MKXL Lives event is over, the full documentary is now live on Hold Back to Block's YouTube channel. Check out the full documentary below.

Is Andrew Bowen Teasing A New MK11U Update?

by Roy Arkon on May 28, 2021 :: 0

Andrew Bowen, the voice actor behind Johnny Cage in both Mortal Kombat XL and Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate, as well as both Rain and Smoke in MKXL specifically, has posted this picture on his Instagram of him along with the Warner Bros. water tower, and with the caption: "It's good to be back".

MK11U Tease Andrew Bowent

We have confirmed in our last news post that WB Games might be on verge of a split, yet it seems that we still might get a new update for MK11U, although it can still be related to an entirely new project. Then again, Bowen never did any role for WB Games other than voicing Johnny Cage, Rain and Smoke in the MK games, so we need to keep that in mind.

We will update you with more news as they arrive.
