MK1 (2023) End of DLC Support, Balance/Bug Fix Patches Continue

Post by Roy Arkon »

The official Mortal Kombat Account on X has just announced that DLC characters and story chapters support for Mortal Kombat 1 (2023) has officially ended. This is not going to affect any necessary balance adjustments or bug fixes that the studio still plans to address.

The officially given reason is that while the developers understand the disappointment of the fans, they need to shift focus in order to make their next project as successful as possible. Have a look:
Mortal Kombat 1 End Of Content Support Announcement
Here is a breakdown of how Netherrealm Studios and WB Games have supported the Mortal Kombat games so far:
  • Mortal Kombat X (Released in April 2015): Last DLC update came in March of 2016, 11 months after release in April of 2015 and the last balance patch was in October of 2016 (1.5 years post release).
  • Mortal Kombat 11 (Released in April 2019): Last big DLC update was in November of 2020, 1 year and 7 months after release, with one more DLC skin pack update a month later. Last balance patch for the game came in May of 2021 (2 years and 2 months post release). Additionally the game received 2 more updates. One to add XBox/MS PC Store cross play (April of 2022) and another with Store adjustments (December of 2022 - 3 years and 9 months post release).
  • Mortal Kombat 1 (2023) (Released in September 2023): Last DLC update with T-1000 from Kombat Pack 2 earlier this year in March (1.5 years post release).
While DLC support is over, players will still have new skin palletes to unlock all the way until Season 16 of Invasions (repeat of Season 8 ), coming in January of next year. Whether every season will be accompanied by a balance/bug fix patch of some sort is still unknown. If so, then we can expect overall game improvements at least until early next year.

With all this said, we wish Netherrealm Studios the best of luck with their next project.

Thanks for the feedback.

Also I wanna bring up, while some fans expect the next game from NetherRealm Studios to be Injustice 3, I don't think it is going to happen. Ed Boon said by himself, when MK1 just revealed, that originally considered making IJ3 after MK11 but then went with MK1 (2023) because otherwise the gap between the two MK games will be too long and some fans won't be happy about it. Plus, Injustice doesn't sell as much as Mortal Kombat, and considering that games take way more time and money to develop nowadays, it seems that WB Games would rather let NRS to focus entirely on MK at this point, as even they said several months ago that they are gonna double down on MK
