The officially given reason is that while the developers understand the disappointment of the fans, they need to shift focus in order to make their next project as successful as possible. Have a look:
Here is a breakdown of how Netherrealm Studios and WB Games have supported the Mortal Kombat games so far:
- Mortal Kombat X (Released in April 2015): Last DLC update came in March of 2016, 11 months after release in April of 2015 and the last balance patch was in October of 2016 (1.5 years post release).
- Mortal Kombat 11 (Released in April 2019): Last big DLC update was in November of 2020, 1 year and 7 months after release, with one more DLC skin pack update a month later. Last balance patch for the game came in May of 2021 (2 years and 2 months post release). Additionally the game received 2 more updates. One to add XBox/MS PC Store cross play (April of 2022) and another with Store adjustments (December of 2022 - 3 years and 9 months post release).
- Mortal Kombat 1 (2023) (Released in September 2023): Last DLC update with T-1000 from Kombat Pack 2 earlier this year in March (1.5 years post release).
With all this said, we wish Netherrealm Studios the best of luck with their next project.
