MK1 (2023) Definitive Edition Official Trailer. Still More Content To Come?

Post by Roy Arkon »

The official Mortal Kombat YouTube page has uploaded a new trailer, this time of the Definitive Edition of Mortal Kombat 1 (2023). As the name suggest, this edition of the game includes all the content that has been released for the game: The base game, Kombat Pack 1, Khaos Reigns alongside Kombat Pack 2, and all other additional stuff added to the game over time. Speaking of, as the trailer shows, the skins based on the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 Movie have also been included, and they are now live in the Premium Shop at the time of this news posting.

Now it is easy to assume that this means that there's no more content coming to MK1 (2023), however, there are more skins for various characters that have been confirmed to be added to the game as all the seasons of Invasions/Towers of Time are now coming in their 2nd rotation, with new skins coming at the beginning of each season. Also, in this trailer itself, in it's end, it says "And more". Now yes, this could mean just the single player modes like Invasions and Towers of Time, or perhaps the skins, or both, but it could also mean that there's still more content coming to the game. As you remember Mortal Kombat 11 got it's Ultimate Edition in November of 2020, and just one month later, it got more skins that were not in the game before, and even after it was announced that there will be no more support for the game, it got more features and changes that were not in the game before over a year later.

Anything is possible when it comes to Mortal Kombat, we will just have to wait and see.

Check out the full trailer below, enjoy:

Actually all Invasions skins and the MK2 Movie skins were added to the game with the previous update for Season of the Cryomancer.

I don't expect any new content to be added to the game at this stage to be honest. Ed Boon is also surprisingly silent about it and hasn't said a word this far about the Definitive Edition.

This also marks the very first time a final edition of the game is not released physically.

And More refers to the things not mentioned on the picture. They are all listed in the detailed description.

The files of the skins were added in previous updates, but they only just now were added to the shop. Previously they were not available to purchase. As for the "And more" line, yes it could mean content that they can't list there, but like I said, MK11 Ultimate got more content afterwards despite being called "Ultimate", and not to mention it got more patches.

Ed Boon has been silent for months now. In fact ever since MK1 released, he talked less and less. Considering how toxic people are to him on Twitter, I am not surprised.

Patches (Hotfixes) are not content, they fix issues.

The current state of the game will allow new content to become available to the players all the way until the repeat of Season 8.

However none of that content will be added to the game post definitibe edition. It is already there. You can interpret this as "I would be suprised if Netherrealm is still working on or adding new content to the game". Other than Hotfixes, I would be extremely surprised if they would add something else. But I would love it if they do as the crediblity of their statements and marketing is on the line.

So you think Ed Boon is not posting because he is scared of toxic fans who are mean to him? He is a big boy and has been posting for ages. For me him not saying anything about the Definitive Edition has nothing to do with the "mean kids" online. He pinned the Frontnite which is only partially Mortal Kombat.

But time will tell. I can only interpret what I am seeing. But saying that it is confirmed that more skins will be added to the game is simply wrong. They will become available but they are all already there and other than what is already there, nothing else is confirmed other than that this is the Definitive Edition of the game.

OK firstly, what Fortnite has to do with this? Of course Ed Boon is gonna Tweet about it, it's a massive collab.

And yes Ed Boon now barely interacts with the fans on Twitter because of how toxic they have become. before 2022, Ed was commenting on a lot of stuff, but now he barely says anything. And yes partially it is due to how much WB allows him to do so, but also because he himself doesn't want to. Even on YouTube, anytime there's a new Kombat Kast or an tournament on the official MK channel, they ban the comments, all because how toxic the fans have become.

Also when I mentioned MK11, in the patches post the last skin pack (the movie skin pack), MK11 not only got bug fixes and balance changes, but also new features like the crossplay between Xbox and Microsoft Play Anywhere. Obviously this only got in MK11 thanks to the patches. It wasn't just balance and bug fixes.

And the skins are coming. According to the Kombat Cup YouTube channel, more skins coming to MK1 at the beginning of every season in their 2nd rotation, from 5-8. And just like the movie skins, yes their files were in the game but only then and there they are gonna be purchasable. If the content is in the files but the players can't interact with it, it doesn't count as new content. And of course new skins for the DLC non-guest characters that fit the seasons, as shown for all the seasons in their 2nd rotation so far.

We will have to see what this "And more" line mean, but regardless, MK1 is getting more content, and that's great.

Is the Frontnite collab more massive than releasing the DEFINITIVE EDITION of your own game?

On multiple occasions Ed Boon has stated that he loves interacting (on Twitter) with the fans. During GamesCom in 2023 he showed up unannounced at the public MK booth even though he didn't have too.

How is your statement about Invasions any different than mine. All that is already in the game.

So you are taking the word of a single YouTube channel just because you want it to be through? People have been posting videos about yes KP3 no KP3 for months.

I so want you to be right but all the facts are pointing in the other direction. Even if something gets added, new content seems to be over.

Have you asked yourself why they are releasing the Movie Skins now, instead of when the movie comes out to create more buzz around it? What they are doing makes zero sense from a marketing perspective for the movie itself, it's too early, there isn't even a trailer yet. It makes only sense if they are planning to cut down on the content support for the game. This will lead to less people playing and thus less purchases if the Movie skins would be released later.

But once again, time will tell.

I wasn't talking about just the Invasions skins, but also more skins that you can buy in the premium shop, these are the skins that Kombat Cup were talking about.

And yes, announcing the Definitive Edition is a big deal, but like I said, MK11 also released the Ultimate Edition, that by the name alone anyone could've thinking there is no content coming, only for MK11 to have not only more skins just one month later, but even crossplay features over a year later, and that one was after NRS/WB announced there would be no more support of any kind, only to find out via the crossplay update they only meant DLC support and balance support, but not support overall.

The fact that it happened in MK11 meaning that it can happen in MK1 also. The fact that the movie skins come now instead of later doesn't change that fact, because like I said, even more skins are coming to MK1 after that. Only difference than the 95 MK Mmovie skin pack in MK11 is that this time we know they are coming.

And as for Ed Boon, yes he stated that he loves talking to the community, but after people keeping harassing you for years on a constant basis, sending you death threats and all the crazy stuff, there's gonna come a point you have to slow things down. If none of that bothered Ed, he would've post way more frequently even today. And yes, once again, a part of it is also WB not letting him to, but even then he would've talk to the Twitter users more frequently than he does now.

And announcing such a huge collab is something that is worth announcing. It might not be as big as announcing what is potentially the last big update for the game, but it is still gigantic.

But you are right, only time will tell.

The official announcements right now are:
- Skins from Invasions until Season 16th all of which are already in the game
- Two skins for connecting to MAX (exclusive to the US) also already in the game

Nothing else is announced so far.

So why do you take the word of one YouTube channel over official announcement in this case, but when a so called "leaker" says something you choose to ignore it and wait for an official announcement? Where is the difference?

What you are saying for MK11 can only be summarised in one way, the game pretty much ended its content updates with the Ultimate Edition. The only exception being 3 skins that were probably finished months before and if I remember correctly were already added in the ultimate edition.

So in your words for Boon Fortnite is worth posting about but the DE is not? Hm...

Hopefully things will change but until then I wouldn't get anyone's hopes up. To be honest I would prefer an end to the entire MK1 fiasco and would welcome a new game that will hopefully have less drama around it. I don't actually need a gazilion skins/palletes for the same character. Having so many makes each and everyone less special. But I guess this is up to everyone's taste.

Ok dude, I can't understand why you keep bringing the Fortnite ad up, and I said that "It might not be as big as announcing what is potentially the last big update for the game, but it is still gigantic". I didn't say that it's important while the DE announcement isn't.

And about the future skins, I listened to this one leaker because these files for these skins were already datamined several days before this announcement from Kombat Cup. He's not the only one saying that. Of course we are gonna have to wait for the skins to officially coming out once season 5 in it's 2nd rotation starts, but considering that NRS/WB themselves said that "and more" line in their own trailer, this one is very easy to believe. So it's not just one leaker, it's multiple leakers on top of NRS/WB themselves.

Also the 95 MK Movie skin pack came to MK11 only about 3 weeks after the Ultimate Edition, not alongside it. And while the DLC support was over in July 2021, the support overall, as we found out, wasn't over, again with the crossplay update.

And regarding skins in general, this is one of the things that make the latest MK games so fun, the ability to go and unlock more stuff the roster is one of the things keeps the latest MK games being engaging. The fact that there are tons of them is only a good thing. If you don't wanna unlock as much, you do you.

And trust me, the drama isn't gonna stop. With the way the community is acting in general (and I've seen some horrible stuff that some members of the community say and do, and I've seen other communities that I can compare them to the MK internet community) and with how content creators making a bank out of the drama and therefore trying to keep it going, the drama around MK on the interent isn't gonna stop. This is not about the games, but the overall mentality of the community. The only reason there is a "fiasco" around MK1 is because the community wanted it to be there, and that happened with MK9, MKX, MK11 and now MK1.

I for one, love MK1, it is one of my favorite MK games of all time, and one of the best fighting games of all time in general even. So regardless what happens in terms of support, MK1 did a phenomenal job, and I'm all happy for it.
