MK1 (2023) Khaos Reigns Launch Trailer, Towers of Time, Ghostface Fatality, Frost in Story Mode & More

Post by Roy Arkon »

We are only 6 days away from the release of Mortal Kombat 1 (2023): Khaos Reigns, and while we are still waiting for the Kombat Kast to feature Noob Saibot as well as updates for Invasions mode and even more stuff, we now have the official launch trailer for the expansion. The trailer includes more gameplay footage for the additional Mortal Kombat characters, Noob Saibot, Cyrax and Sektor, as well as more bits and pieces from the new Story Mode chapters. In addition you get to see more Animalities, including a callback to Noob Saibot's Make A Wish Fatality from Mortal Kombat 9 (2011) and other finishing moves. Have a look:
Are you interested in a Spoiler-Free version of the Trailer? We have it right here:
On top of all of these, we got several major surprises in this trailer, so beware of spoilers moving forward. The first one at 01:54 mark, we see the return of Towers of Time. During the latest Kombat Kast, the crew at NetherRealm Studios hinted at some new updates for Invasions mode. So as of right now, we do not know if the Towers of Time are added to Invasions or a mode that stands on it own. We will probably have to wait and see in the next Kombat Kast.

Another big surprise is we get to see Ghostface, one of the new guest characters being added to the game, and we get to see one of his Fatalities. This probably indicates that Ghostface will be the first guest character to join Khaos Reigns post release.
Mortal Kombat 1 Khaos Reigns Frost Story Mode
The final surprise is that Frost will indeed have a role to play in the new chapters of Story Mode.

From the official press-release:
The launch trailer provides a closer look at the new Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns storyline, which continues the cinematic narrative centered on a dangerous threat that has emerged from an alternate timeline, led by the ruthless Titan Havik. To defeat this menace, Fire God Liu Kang must rally his champions and put faith in his enemies before his New Era of peace is turned into khaos for the realms.

The trailer also reveals the first Fatality for upcoming guest fighter Ghostface, the recurring identity donned by antagonists from the Scream horror movie franchise, who will be part of Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns alongside the T-1000 Terminator (Terminator 2: Judgment Day) and Conan the Barbarian.

Additionally, the video highlights new gameplay moments for Cyrax, Sektor, and Noob Saibot, who will all join the roster on Sept. 24 when the expansion releases, as well as four new character skins available as a bonus for those who pre-order Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns, including Wedding Scorpion, Empress Mileena, and klassic Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 versions of Sub-Zero and Noob Saibot.

Lastly, the trailer shows off a further glimpse at Animalities, the fan-favorite finishing moves that allow all playable characters to morph into their spirit animal to annihilate defeated opponents, and Towers of Time, a returning mode with an on-going rotation of challenges and in-game events, both of which available as a free content update for all Mortal Kombat 1 owners in conjunction with the Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns launch.
Mortal Kombat 1 (2023): Khaos Reigns launches on September 24th, 2024 for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC and Nintendo Switch.

So these new Towers are indeed the Towers of Time. But how is it gonna work? That's the question I wanna know, because the Gateway Towers in the Gateway Mesa of Invasions are basically the Towers of Time, having Towers that change by the hour, day, week and season, with 3 for each of the first time groups, and of course with the themed modifiers for each Tower. So how is this gonna be different from the Gateway Towers?

And even more so the rewards, they are all attached to the Seasonal Tower and the other Invasions Mesas, as well as the Shrine, so does that mean they are gonna add a huge ton of cosmetics to the game so they can fill all of these modes? Not that the mount of skins/Gear pieces in MK1 is small, but still.

I'm super curious about these.

We will have to wait and see. There are currently multiple theories. My personal criticism at the gateway towers is the lack of rewards for all the other towers and mostly the lack of overview. You have to traverse from tower to tower to tower to see what is there. So the Towers of Time might actually be a redisign of the Gateway towers, Or a separate thing on its own.

There is even a theory flying around that Invesions might end after the current season and go on Rotation. Hope not, I want to see content being added and improved and not taken away,

The Kombat Kast should clarify everything.

Invasions is not going away, we already know that there's an 8th Season coming up, that is Liu Kang's Season. Also considering that Quan Chi, a DLC character, was the Titan for the Titan Battle for this Season, makes me believe that they're gonna expend Invasions Seasons not only for characters on the base roster, but also DLC characters. So we might get a Season with the final boss being Ermac, Noob Saibot or Takeda, and then DLC chars being Titans for Titan Battles just like Quan Chi.

As for the Gateway Towers and the walking around, well that's apart of Invasions being a combination of multiple single player elements from all MK games. Invasions' tile-based movement is reminiscent of MK Deadly Alliance Konquest mode, and yes it's not exactly the same as it was back then, but it's closer to it than the Konquest modes in Deception or Armageddon which had fully free movement.

And yes the TOT's might be a redesign of the Gateway Towers or a separate thing. I also saw someone on Reddit suggesting the idea that this might be like the Legendary Gear Multiverse from Injustice 2 where you have to grind multiple requirements over time to get a super cool cosmetic at the end. That's just a theory of course.

Only mere hours for the Kombat Kast.
