[Tutorial] How to Make skin Mods + Tools

Post by a.martin »

First let's start with the things you need,

Gildor tools to decompress the CHAR_Files:
You can get them here: http://www.gildor.org/downloads
Check the "Other tools" Section at the bottom, and Download the Unreal Package Decompressor

MKX Character skin modding toolset (beta) {By oubgrdevvbuyn} - Uploaded by: Unclefestor
Latest version preffered. (0.4)
http://www.mksecrets.net/forums/eng/vie ... =97&t=7871

And a Photoshop Action to make things even faster, Thanks to mrs53360
mkx + Alpha.zip
(1.36 KiB) Downloaded 1635 times
Tutorial:

0.0. Use Gildor's Decompression tool
* (Drag the CHAR_File of your choice to the decompress.exe)

0.1. Drop decompressed package (only one at a time) in "input" folder

1. Run 1_export.bat
After that you will find textures in "texture" folder and mipmaps in "texture\MIPS"

----editing part
-Edit any of them.
IMPORTANT: Do not change file names and do not add other files!

Delete all unnecessary files that you won't edit to save time;

If you look for the textures of your character, you're looking for a file that will have the name and the word "Diff"

Extra: In case you want to edit the eyes you'll want to keep the files that ends with "EyesMouth_Diff" (on both folders "texture" - "MIPS")

Like this:
T1.png
After Erasing Unnecesary files
T4.png
T4.png (8.23 KiB) Viewed 27828 times
You'll open it up on Photoshop, and edit them as you want.

After done, you'll go to the MIPS folder and look for the files that have the same name, (Numbers at the beggining doesn't count)

After Erasing Unnecesary files
T5.png
Now you have to open all of them in photoshop from the smallest size to the biggest, and after that, your main edited texture (from the "Texture" folder) at the top of all
T6.png
Here's where the "MKX" Photoshop Action comes up,

Click the mmx9 action and hit the little "play" button
T6-2.png
Photoshop will do the rest from there, (but basically grabs your edited main texture and inserts it on the other files that have different sizes, and save them.)

----end of editing part

*******************************************************************

----injecting

-Open "scripts\inject.bms" in notepad and edit PKName value
(e.g. string PKName = "char_kitana_m" for string PKName = "CHAR_Mileena_C")
T3.png
2. Run 2_inject.bat
If your GPU does not DirectCompute compatible you will have to wait
till [[[[[[[[texture compression completed]]]]]]]] quite long.

(e.g. one 2048x2048 texture is about 1hour on AMD Athlon II x3 440 3.00GHz)
When compression is done check "output" folder

-You can edit another texture and repeat injection at any time.

----end of injecting

But if you run 1_export.bat again, all textures will be restored to original.

3. Run z_clean.bat (optional step)
Reset toolset. Wipe all modded and input files(except output\PKName.XXX)

*******************************************************************
Advices and Extra Help:

How to install the MKX photoshop Action:

*Copy the mkx+alpha to the Actions directory of your program;
e.g: Photoshop Cs5 \Presets \Actions

-From the MENU Bar choose Window>Actions

-In the Actions palette, click on the tiny black triangle in the top right corner

-Click on “Load Actions”

-Find the mkx .atn file in the directory

-Select the Action and open the file
*this will load the action into the Actions palette so you can choose it in a later..
Advice; If your work on photoshop, and don't wanna ever lose your job, just save it in a PSD file and keep it on a secure folder, that way, you'll be able to edit your skin any time and also have a backup just in case :)

Very good tutorial.
I am gonna request this as a sticky. :)
DaTeHaCKs now stands against sites like GameFaqs where their staff doesn't respect their members opinion, delete threads without a warning, delete posts without a warning, doesn't respect people's opinions and directly infract user accounts just making a complain or trying to contact Administrators. The Moderator Staff of GameFaqs/GameSpot is a bunch of ass losers who deserve no such status. Playing with a moderator/admin status like a gun is a way to show how big cowards they are.

I do not have Gimp2 to edit, but, I would say that the procedure it's the same, but a little longer on the editing textures part..

-decompress
-extract the textures
-edit the main texture, and save it

(Beacause you don't have photoshop)
-edit the textures of the same name (same name of the main texture) of the MIPS folder, on GIMP one by one;
you have to take your already finished main texture, and insert it on the top of the textures from the MIPS folder, and in then save them.

then the rest goes the same way;
-Inject; and then try your skin :)

I hope you can make it and it works :)

Has anyone tried modding Mileena to make her more of a Kitana clone instead of Shang Tsung's experiment?
Been trying to figure out how to get rid of those teeth.
Her texture files for CHAR_Mileena_A seem to open up with the same bells and whistles as other characters do.
For example, under MIPS, I don't see anything for CHAR_Mileena_A.diff, though Kitana does show all the smaller files mentioned in the tutorial.

Ideas?

I think that you could swap the CHAR_(name)_ScriptAssets.xxx file..
but that's kind of advanced things that I'm not even aware of..

I throw that idea because the ScriptsAssets file have all the moveset of the character..
so you'll just have to re-paint kitana's clothes to pink and a little black and grey, and swap the scriptassets file, so that would be Kitana's model but with Mileena's moveset..

But I also think that would end up in a Buggy character.. because of Mileena's teeth and mouth..

So that might be one way, but I don't recomend it.. :(

True, but that would also end up using Kitana's clothing. (which I'm not bad mouthing; I really like the more assassin-y feel it's got over her usual royal attire lately)
Mileena's #1 costume is by far my favorite outfit to date so goal 1 is to not lose it and making her more human is a secondary. Like a continuation of her ending from Armageddon.

Am I the only one that can't change all of the clothing and when I try it doesn't change? I changed all of Mileena's pink into red and it didn't work.
