It doesn't matter if you turn the post count off in general chat. If they want to spam, they will fnd another place to do it in.

What some forums do is turn off access to certain areas of the forum until the new person has been a member for a week. A forum I go to as the political forum turned off until they reach a week because that forum has a lot of BUSH IS AN IDIOT type threads and now, those threads have actually been declining.

Yes, this will not stop people who just want to spam around.
But it will stop those who post there just to get a higher rank.

The off topic forum is here, just because a forum cannot exist without it.

BTW a new way to rank users is in development and very soon the post count will not matter at all.

They will still go and up their rank in the threads that allow them to do it.

Trust me, you'l see a lot of "yeah, Sub-Zero is better" type of answers in the MK threads. People are just ignorant like that. At least give a rational explaination.

At least what we can do, is try to make things better.
If the members decide to totally destroy a forum, there is nothing the staff can do to stop them.

And I mean really nothing.

I just send them a friendly PM warning and if they screw up again, I ban their asses.

can you delete their posts?

you can ban them,no matter how many email accounts they make, but theyll keep coming back.and unless they change their computer(different ip number),they will continuously come back and spam.

it's just a part of message boards:n00bs spamming to up their post count.quite sad, really.

Yes, I can delete their posts, but they will just post again.

If I ban their e-mail address they will simply register a new one.

If I ban their IP. Well sometimes this work, but most people have a dynamic IP address, that changes every once in a while. So, that's no solution either.

You can do a temp ban, just as warning, not a perma ban. If they continue to spam then do a perma ban. We had some people do that in the forum I moderate and we just keep banning all of their accounts but not before we embarrass them a bit by letting them know that we are on to them. After a few bannings, they get bored of trying and they either go away forever or they come back without us knowing which user ID is theirs but they behave.
