Tobias On The Lin Kuei, Johnny Cage & Liu Kang's Origins

Post by Roy Arkon »

A Twitter user asked John Tobias the other day about what book gave him and Ed Boon the inspiration for the Lin Kuei, the clan of Chinese Ninjas in which Sub-Zero and Noob Saibot hail from. Tobias then came with a series of Tweets explaining the process of creating the Lin Kuei and how the book called China's Ninja Connection was the basis for the creation of the Lin Kuei. Here is the first Tweet opening that series:
At the very end of the Tweet series, another user noticed the name Michael Grimm on the images from Tobias' notepad, and he asked who that character. Turns out, according to Tobias, that this was the original planned name for Johnny Cage, and Tobias started another series of Tweets explaining the origins of not only Johnny as a character, but his name as well. Here is the opening Tweet for that series as well:
During that series, Tobias also gave the origins for Liu Knag, who was inspired Gordon Liu and Bruce Lee, who were Tobias' heroes growing up.
Tabmok99 then came in and asked Tobias if he still has the footage of Jean-Claude Van Damme (one of the actors who Boon and Tobias wanted to develop their game around, alongside Steven Segal) of which him and Boon had digitized some footage from a few of his films for the game and put together a quick demo of, is still in somewhere in his possession.
Tobias then made it clear that it wasn't an actual demo but just a demo of the digitizing tech they had at the time. He also confirmed he doesn't have it but Boon might have it.
And finally, Boon came in and said that he might still have that footage.
That will be really cool to see that old demo, as that will be a true piece of gaming history, giving the very origins of Mortal Kombat. And of course, all of those origin story of those characters and clans, is surely nothing short of incredible, and give the perspective of how much work and passion did both Boon and Tobias had for the creation of MK.
