Midway Announced MK: Shaolin Monks
Posted On: Oct 27 2004, 08:28 AM
In a press release
Midway officially announced the next Action/Adventure Mortal
Kombat game, Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks. Below is a part of
the text:
“Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks is an
Action/Adventure title that will help to expand the already wildly
popular Mortal Kombat universe well beyond the fighting genre,” said
David F. Zucker, president and chief executive officer. “Mortal Kombat:
Shaolin Monks is also our first step toward delivering something that
Mortal Kombat fans have been calling for: a new game set in the Mortal
Kombat universe every year. We are planning our Mortal Kombat release
schedule with the expectation that we will deliver a new Mortal Kombat
title annually.”
Mortal Kombat : Shaolin Monks is an Action/Adventure title driven by
both intense single and multi-player action. Similar to the recently
released Mortal Kombat: Deception, background interactions (i.e., acid
pits, living trees, spiked ceilings, etc.), multiple new fatalities, and
action-based puzzles will also play an important role in the player’s
quest for an “outstanding” victory. Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks will
feature an impressive line-up of Mortal Kombat characters, as well, that
make frequent appearances as enemies, in boss battles and during several
additional in-game interactions.
“For the first time ever, Mortal Kombat fanatics will get to explore all
the mythos and rumors of the Mortal Kombat universe from an entirely new
perspective. Action/Adventure fans will be blown away by the intuitive
kombat system, puzzle solving and epic storyline that can be experienced
in either the single player mode or through co-op play,” said Mortal
Kombat creator, Ed Boon.

Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks First
Look
Posted On: Oct 23 2004, 01:23 PM
GameSpot have posted an exclusive first look on the next Mortal
Kombat game, Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks. Below is a part of the
article:
Few hard details have been revealed so far
about Shaolin Monks' gameplay or setting--the game looks to be a
brawler-style action game, and it's a pretty safe bet that we'll be
seeing plenty of places and faces from previous MK fighting games in
this new action adventure. Mortal Kombat fans will notice Liu Kang, Kung
Lao, Mileena, and the recently returned Baraka in the new screenshots,
not to mention backgrounds like the portal and the tower from Mortal
Kombat II. Interestingly enough, some screens show several Baraka-like
characters fighting at one time. Perhaps we'll finally get some more
background on Baraka's often-discussed race of Outworld mutants as
Shaolin Monks' storyline unfolds.
The game will have both single-player and cooperative modes, and though
the number of simultaneous players hasn't been revealed, it's worth
noting that the screenshots don't seem to contain more than two classic
characters onscreen at any one time. Like the recently released Mortal
Kombat: Deception, Shaolin Monks will contain many backgrounds with
interactive features like spiked ceilings, acid pits, and living trees
(we appreciate the many nods to MKII that are apparently being included
in the game). And of course, no Mortal Kombat game would be complete
without a host of gory new fatalities.
The article also contains the first 8 screenshots of Mortal Kombat:
Shaolin Monks
You can read the complete text of the article and see the screenshots
here.
In another update
GameSpot announced that
Midway plan to release a new Mortal Kombat game every year:
The other big change to the Mortal Kombat
series is its frequency. In a statement, Midway president David F.
Zucker said a new game in the franchise would arrive each year. “Mortal
Kombat: Shaolin Monks is also our first step toward delivering something
that Mortal Kombat fans have been calling for: a new game set in the
Mortal Kombat universe every year," he said. "We are planning our Mortal
Kombat release schedule with the expectation that we will deliver a new
Mortal Kombat title annually.”

Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks
Information
Posted On: Oct 18 2004, 10:24 AM
The german website
GameFront posted a news based on the Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks
article that appeared in the latest issue of GameInformer. Below are
both, the original text (in German) and the translation I made for
Mortal Kombat Secrets:
The most important from this article in english.
- Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks will appear in September 2005 for
both PlayStation 2 and X-Box
- MK: SM will be an Action/Adventure game
- The game will bring you back in the time of the first games
- Secret characters as Smoke and Ermac are planned
- Raiden will be the one who will tell the story
- Multiplayer will be possible
- Boss characters will also be part of this game
- The main character will have 10 fatalities
- Brutalities and Team Fatalities will be available too
- The Shadow Priests will most probably be also available as enemy
in this game
- Some of the old arenas will return (Dead Pool and Living Forest)
- 30% of the game will be secrets (for example: You can fight
again Ermac, only if you play as Sub-Zero)
- During the game your character will increase his Experience
Points, just like in Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero
Note: This is an information that do not comes
direct from Midway, so misstakes are possible and we are not responsible
for them.

Mortal Kombat: Deception ships
millionth unit
Posted On: Oct 13 2004, 12:33 PM
GameSpot posted the following news on their website:
Midway's ultraviolent fighter becomes
fastest-selling game in the company's history.
This just in: apparently violence sells. After its first week on the
market, Mortal Kombat: Deception, the title in Midway's fighting
franchise, has shipped one million units. The bloody fighting title has
become the fastest-selling game in Midway's history, eclipsing its
antecedent Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance.
Mortal Kombat: Deception continues the series' trademark brutality, with
plenty of hard-hitting 3D combat and highly controversial fatality
moves. The game introduces new game modes, two fatalities per character,
and online play for the Xbox and PlayStation 2. A GameCube version is
expected in early 2005. For more about Mortal Kombat: Deception's
decapitations and dismemberings in gory detail, read our review of the
game.
