Midway Gamers Day
Posted On: Aug 26 2004, 10:30 PM

Today is Midway Gamers Day and three of the staff members of Mortal Kombat Online are in San Diego. Here is what they have to report:

To hold you over, two pieces of information were revealed today. The first being that Shujinko will not only feature standard fighting styles, but will also be "an uber-character" that will possess special moves from nearly every fighter in the Mortal Kombat universe. Footage we saw had Shujinko tele-slam his opponent (Kenshi/Ermac), freeze his opponent (Sub-Zero/Frost), and then throw a harpoon (Scorpion). In additional news, it was revealed that neither Smoke nor Noob Saibot will be featured in Mortal Kombat: Deception. However, a new hybrid character named Noob Smoke is present. He is two entities in one, and functions much like a tag-team character for some devestating fighting action.

More information will be available very soon.

Mileena Appears In Playboy
Posted On: Aug 26 2004, 02:02 PM

CNN Money posted an article entitled "Video game gals take it off for Playboy - Silicon will meet silicone in October issue of men's magazine". Below is a part of this aticle:

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) – She's a statuesque redhead with green eyes who stands 5'7". Her measurements are 36-22-36 and she's posing topless for the October issue of Playboy magazine.

Oh, just one thing... she's a video game character.

Her name's Bloodrayne and she'll make her naked debut alongside a feature in the upcoming issue of the men's magazine.

Joining her in the CGI photospread (which will accompany an article about the changing face of gaming) will be a handful of gaming characters. While not all the characters will appear in the pixilated buff, you can expect a lot of come hither looks from some butt-kicking women, including familiar faces from Midway's (MWY: Research, Estimates) "Mortal Kombat" and Namco's "Tekken" series as well as Vivendi's (V: Research, Estimates) upcoming "Red Ninja" and "Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude" and Sammy Studios' forthcoming "Darkwatch: Curse of the West". (See the accompanying pop-up gallery for some of the characters that were submitted to the magazine.)

In the magazine will appear the following game characters:

BloodRayne
The half-human, half-vampire star of Majesco's "BloodRayne" franchise will appear topless in the October Playboy.

Mileena
One of "Mortal Kombat's" most familiar faces (who often sports a blue leotard in the game) will be pose seductively, but not nude, for the magazine.

Nina
After kicking butt in Namco's "Tekken" franchise for years, Nina will star in her own game ("Death by Degrees") in 2005. She will appear in the Playboy, but will not be nude.

Luba Licious
Luba's the party girl in the upcoming "Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude," so it's probably no surprise she'll be nude in the gallery.

Kurenai
The main character of Vivendi Universal's upcoming "Red Ninja" will pose seductively in the magazine, but not nude.

Tala
This dark femme fatale (who also happens to be half-vampire) who will make her debut in Sammy Studios upcoming "Darkwatch: Curse of the West" will also appear in the October Playboy.

MK Characters in Unreal Championship 2
Posted On: Aug 26 2004, 01:40 PM

The X-Box version of Unreal Championship 2 will feature "special guest appearances from another realm", most probably from Mortal Kombat because of the MK Dragon Logo, that flashes through the screen when this is mentioned in the newest trailer, that appeared at IGN. Somethig very interesting in the trailer is the Finish Him. Could this game contains some Fatalities?

Midway Arcade Treasures 2: Hands-On
Posted On: Aug 24 2004, 09:19 PM

IGN published a preview of the upcoming Midway Arcade Treasures 2. From the article:

For the second compilation package, Midway will be including the following games: A.P.B., Arch Rivals, Championship Sprint, Cyberball 2072, Gauntlet 2, Hard Drivin', Mortal Kombat II, Mortal Kombat III, NARC, Pit Fighter, Primal Rage, Rampage World Tour, Spy Hunter 2, STUN Runner, Timber, Total Carnage, Wizard of Wor, Xenophobe, and Xybots. Original plans were to have the original Mortal Kombat as well as the arcade helicopter game Steel Talons in the package, but they were removed; in their place comes the little seen Kosmik Kroozr' and Wacko.
...
The rest of the package is currently a mixed bag of quality in the preview builds we've played. The early games, like Timber and Wizard of Wor are pretty much completed and play identically to their arcade counterparts. APB and Gauntlet 2 run at full speed but features a bit of slow down during the action when the screen clutters up with enemies. Hard Drivin', the 3D driving game, runs at full speed but doesn't have sound emulated yet. And the most recent games in the batch, including Mortal Kombat II, Mortal Kombat III and Primal Rage are currently only working at half-speed or less.
...
The developers are definitely making strides in development, though, and we're confident that the final product will turn out excellent. In fact, at this weekend's Classic Gaming Expo in San Jose, Midway had the most current version at its booth. All three versions were on display, and the version that was the furthest along was, surprise, the GameCube game. Most games were either running at 100% emulation on the Cube...or were running too well and needed their speeds turned down a bit to be accurate arcade versions.

Twenty bucks for twenty games is never a bad deal. But when those twenty games are award-winning arcade hits...that's one hell of a package. There are a few games, like the Mortal Kombat duo, that are worth the pricetag alone. Midway Arcade Treasures 2 shouldn't be missed, no matter if you're an old-school gamer or someone who's never even experienced the originals when they hit the gameroom those many years ago.

Zeus Emulation Progress
Posted On: Aug 24 2004, 03:50 PM

Zeus is the name of the hardware used by several Midway games, including the arcade version of Mortal Kombat 4 and The Grid. There was no emulator that even tries to support it, but this has changed. From version 0.84u3 of MAME the emulation of Zeus is in development and Mortal Kombat 4 has been added to the list of supported games. The game is still not playable, but the Zeus emulation is still a work in progress and it will take time before we can play the game. Currently Mortal Kombat 4 shows only the first test screen. Below are three screenshots taken directly from MAME 32 0.84u5.

The newest version of MAME you can find at http://www.zophar.net/.

Mortal Kombat: Deception On GameCube In 2005
Posted On: Aug 20 2004, 10:24 PM

IGN published an interview with Steve Allison, who confirmed that there will be a GameCube version of Mortal Kombat: Deception in early 2005. Below is a part of the interview:

IGN: What made you decide to announce a GameCube version of Mortal Kombat: Deception?
Steve: Midway has a lot of GameCube fans and as you pointed out in your first question, it's upwards of 300,000 plus on GameCube worldwide. Again the decision to hold or delay Deception from the GameCube platform was really driven from a need to turn the team's focus towards getting online gameplay solved on the PlayStation 2 and Xbox…in the end, the team's theory of getting Deception working flawlessly online for both proved absolutely true.

IGN: When do the PS2 and Xbox versions of the game ship and when will the GameCube one come out?
Steve: PS2 and Xbox will be available Oct 4th, 2004; GameCube will be available in early 2005.

IGN: Who is the development team for the GameCube version?
Steve: Midway's internal MK team, the same team who is now completing Deception on the other two platforms, is also doing the GameCube version in our Chicago studios.

IGN: Do you plan to include any console-specific changes for the GCN build of MK: Deception?
Steve: There will be one or two GameCube specific surprises, yes. But we won't reveal those right now. Stay tuned.

IGN also posted some exclusive screenshots. Below are the most interesting of them. For the rest, take a look here.

New Interview With John Podlasek and Nick Shin
Posted On: Aug 6 2004, 05:42 PM

PlantUm has released an interview with the producer of Mortal Kombat: Deception John Podlasek and the game programmer Nick Shin.

What is Deception's current state?

(John Podlasek, Producer)
We’re very busy working on the game, which is progressing well.
We’ve broken the team into different sub groups to work on the various modes, along with adding a User Interface group to work on all the menu screens.
We also have an FMV group busy away working on the game’s opening cinematic, which is going to be very cool this time.
Our plan is to release the U.S. version of the game on October 4, 2004 and we’re happy to say that we’re tracking on schedule.

How were the mini-games put together?

(Nick Shin, Game Programmer)
MK Deception will feature new game modes to expand on the mini games beloved by many players.
Mini games in the past have pretty much been a small and diversionary tactics to break up the constant mode of: play a couple of rounds; beat your opponent and repeat.
But these mini games helped defined what Mortal Kombat is today.
This time, in Mortal Kombat: Deception, mini games will be bigger and better.
One game mode will be a strategy board game.
You will need to place your characters on the board (each handicapped by the position they cover -- do you place your favs up front and in more numbers or save them out back where they are more powerful but in lesser numbers).
And, like in the fight modes where backgrounds have interactive elements, this board game will as well.
We will place power-up abilities when you occupy a square and hold it.
Another game mode in Mortal Kombat: Deception will be Puzzle Kombat.

This game will cause people to yell,
"Here comes the Fury!"
"I suck..."
"Oh, what happened?
You lose?"

People who are not playing but watching their friends play can't help but also burst out,
"What are you doing?!?"
"You suck..."
"Gimme the controller, you're going down."

You select a character that's unique by their super move abilities.
Some of them have offensive power moves that fills up your opponent's screen, while others have defensive moves to help clear our your own screen.
Each background in this game mode are also unique such that you get to see different "fatalities" performed on the victim of a poorly played game.
Oh yeah, both of these games modes will be playable online.... did I mention these games will be ONLINE?

Since Deception is just 2 months away from shipping, I hear that the next installment of the series has been confirmed.

(John Podlasek)
I can say that it’s probably a safe bet that there will be another MK title in the works sooner than later :-)
... What, when, where, etc are obviously still up in the air at the moment.
Our energies right now are focused towards the completion of Deception and we’re really excited to see what you guys think!

Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to answer these questions!
