Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero Stage 8

Stage 8: Shinnok's Fortress

maximum experience points: 20,000
mission: explore the fortress to find Quan Chi's sanctuary
password: xjknzt
moves attainable: all moves previously unattained

Stage 8 is the most difficult stage in the game, which makes sense, seeing that it's the last stage as well. It's similar to stage 4, just one very large maze where everything looks exactly the same. If you're like me, you're going to need at least a small amount of help getting through this stage successfully and defeating the bosses at the end. This is the longest, most drawn out guide of any of the stages, for the longest and most confusing stage of the game. Before we begin, there's something you need to know first:

Elevators play a huge role in this stage, as they did in stage 6. Before you get started on the level, you'll need to know how to work the elevators. Simply stand over the elevator and use the following key combination to go either up or down. Note: these are the default settings. If you've changed the controls, the buttons to move the elevators still remain the same.

to go up an elevator: L1/A + HK Buttons
to go down an elevator: L1/A + LP Buttons

Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero Stage 8

You'll start out on the ground floor of Shinnok's fortress. You're to explore the fortress, and try to find Quan Chi's sanctuary, discovering the fortress's many hidden secrets on your way. This is probably one of the most graphically impressive stages, with the large Gothic background, and marble floors. Go to the right, and face off against the newest type of enemies (see the picture). These assassins are extremely difficult. They'll continue to relentlessly pound on you until either you're dead or you've stopped them. The enemies on higher floors have huge axes, with which they'll try to slice you up with. Combo them as much as possible. An effective combo to use on them is to freeze them while they're standing, then uppercut them, and while they're falling, freeze them again, then uppercut them once more. You can repeat this over and over until they're dead. You may want to start out with a full ice bar, so you don't run out. It usually takes around 6 freezes/uppercuts to kill these enemies. Continue running to the right.

Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero Stage 8

Once you get to the first elevator, go up it (see the picture) (see the combination above to find out how to move the elevators up/down.). once you're to the top, go to the left, past the elevator, and into the large room. The doors will close after you go through them, and the game will load for a couple of seconds. You will now fight the first of 3 female bosses, the ones you saw in the fmv clip at the end of stage 6.

Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero Stage 8

The first female boss is Kia. She is probably the easiest of the 3. She doesn't have a very wide selection of special moves, just a boomerang (see the picture), and a special type of throw.

Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero Stage 8

Use a lot of slides, sweeps, combos, and if you've got enough power on your ice meter, clones. She always seems to run right into them. If you've made it this far in the game, she will not be difficult to beat at all. After you have killed her, grab the first of 3 keys to Quan Chi's teleporter that appears after she dies. This is your first checkpoint. Now, go back right and out the door.

Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero Stage 8

After the door opens, you want to get back to the ground floor. Go right, go past the first elevator, and when you get to the second elevator, go down on it. After you're on the ground floor, run to the right, fighting off any enemies that you come upon. After running across the ground floor of the fortress, you should come to the other of 2 main elevators on the fortress's main floor. Go up it. Now you're going to collect some herbs. Collecting these herbs is essential, because they'll become valuable as the stage progresses. here is what you've got to do, step by step, in order, once you've taken the elevator from the main floor up:

1. Go to the right, crossing the 3 swinging blades.
2. Grab the herbs (see the picture).
3. Go back left through the 3 swinging blades.
4. Go past the elevator and continue to the left.
5. Go past 1 more swinging blade and another elevator.
6. Go past 2 more swinging blades before grabbing the herbs on the other side.

Now, go back to the right, crossing the 2 swinging blades again, and to the elevator. Go up that elevator. once you're up it, go to the right and grab the herbs.

Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero Stage 8

After grabbing the herbs, go back to the left. Cross the first elevator, and when you get to the second elevator, go up. After you've reached the next floor, go right, passing 4 swinging blades. Continue to the right until you reach the next elevator. Go up that elevator. The top of that elevator will look similar to pic #6. This is the top of Shinnok's fortress. Access the inventory menu and place Kia's crystal at the top of that elevator. This is your second checkpoint.

Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero Stage 8

Now, go back down the elevator, and go to the right. There is another room (see the picture). The doors will again close behind you, and this is where you'll fight the second of three female bosses hidden within Shinnok's fortress. This woman's name is Sareena.

Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero Stage 8

Sareena is the hardest of the 3 female assassins. She has a very wide assortment of moves, which are all equally dangerous. She has a hook sword, with which she throws at you, and throws you with. She also has a rapid spin move, and if you touch it at all, you get knocked back. If she does this, try to sweep her or freeze her.

She also has a move very similar to Sonya's leg grab, in addition to some very lethal combos, which can drain your life quickly. Stay on your toes at all times, because she is very quick and likes to trap you in the corner..

Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero Stage 8

When you defeat Sareena, the second key to Quan Chi's teleporter will show up, and you'll have the chance to rip out Sareena's spine with your spine rip move (see the picture). however, if you choose to rip out her spine, it'll be to your own disadvantage later on. either way, take the second key and go back left. Wait for the doors to open back up, and leave the room.

Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero Stage 8

After you've left the room, you've got to get back down to the ground floor of the fortress again. This is where it begins to get a little confusing, so take it one step at a time. here is exactly the way to go, starting from just outside Sareena's room:

1. Go left out of the room, and go past the first elevator you come to.
2. Go left, past the 4 swinging blades. Continue left until you get to an elevator.
3. Go down that elevator.
4. once down, go right.
5. Continue right until you get to the next elevator. Go down it.
6. once down it, go right.
7. Cross the 1 swinging blade, and continue right until you get to the next elevator.
8. Go down that elevator.

You should now be on the ground floor of Shinnok's fortress (see the picture).

Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero Stage 8

Once you're on the ground floor, go left, and fight off any enemies that you come upon until you get to the elevator you went up during the beginning of the stage. Go back up it. once you're all the way up, go to the right, and when you get to the next elevator, go up it. When you're all the way to the top of that elevator, go left past the 2 swinging blades. You should now be confronted with yet another room (see the picture). here you will fight the third and final female assassin. This one's name is Jataaka. enter the room, and the doors will again close behind you.

Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero Stage 8

Jataaka is harder than Kia, but easier than Sareena. She also has 2 metallic weapons with which she can combo you with and throw at you. She can also generate sparks with the metal weapon and shoot them at you, so watch out, because they take off massive amounts of power. Defeat her just how defeated the past 2 female assassins, by using a combination of slides, sweeps, uppercuts, and combos. once you've defeated her, the third and final key to Quan Chi's teleporter shows up. Grab it. This is your third checkpoint. once you've defeated Jataaka and you've grabbed the third key, go back right and out of the room.

Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero Stage 8

Now it's just a matter of mindlessly roaming around the stage to place the two remaining crystals where they need to go. Again, this can get confusing, so if you get lost, you may need to lose a life and start back over up at jatakka's room. from Jataaka's room, here is exactly what you need to do to place the first crystal where it needs to go:

Leave Jataaka's room, cross the 2 swinging blades, and go down on the next elevator.

1. once down, go left to the second elevator, and go up on it.
2. once up, go right, cross the 1 swinging blade, and go up on the next elevator.
3. Go left and grab the herbs (see the picture).
4. Go back down the elevator.
5. Go back left, going past the one swinging blade and another elevator.
6. Keep going left, crossing 2 more swinging blades.
7. on the next elevator, go up.

This is the location where you will place Jataaka's crystal. This is your fourth checkpoint.

Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero Stage 8

Now, for the final crystal. here is exactly what you need to do from the point at which you placed Jataaka's crystal:

1. Go back down the elevator.
2. once down, go left, go past the 2 swinging blades, and at the next elevator, go down.
3. once down, go right, cross 2 more swinging blades, and at the next elevator, go down.
4. once down, go right, go past the first elevator, and at the second elevator, go up.
5. once up, go right, cross the 1 swinging blade, and at the next elevator, go up.
6. once up, go left. Pass the elevator, and grab the herbs.
7. Go back right to the elevator, and go up to the top.

Here is the location in which you will place Sareena's crystal (see the picture).

Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero Stage 8

After Sub-Zero has placed the third and final crystal where it needs to go, the fmv takes over from there. It starts out with a clip of all of the 3 crystals uniting together to make Quan Chi's teleporter (see the picture). Sub-Zero is then teleported to Quan Chi's sanctuary.

Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero Stage 8

If you haven't beat the stage yet, don't read this step. It contains details of the fmv scene with Quan Chi and Sub-Zero. Quan Chi welcomes Sub-Zero to his fortress, and tells Sub-Zero that if he's still looking for the amulet, he can find it at the pyramid's apex, around Shinnok's neck. "you've arrived a little late." Quan Chi says.

Sub-Zero replies with "I was busy!". Quan Chi then goes on, asking Sub-Zero "don't you realize why Raiden sent you? the Netherealm is a place for lost souls. You cannot exist here unless you're tainted with evil. Join our brothers of the shadow, and worship our lord Shinnok!". Sub-Zero then replies in a very stern voice: "never, sorcerer!". You are now to fight and defeat Quan Chi before continuing on with the stage.

Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero Stage 8

Quan Chi is actually quite easy. however, his moves are extremely deadly, and he's got a lot of them, so be careful. All of his moves are green. he's got a fireball like Liu Kang's, a forceball similar to reptile's (see the picture #17), and a force field type move like Sindel's scream in MK3, which drags you in for attacking if you get caught in it. he also has a move similar to the water bosses in stage 4, where he lifts his arms up, and a bunch of green liquid comes up from under the ground and knocks you up into the air, suspending you there, until Quan Chi comes and uppercuts you. he also has a combo where he spins around, slicing you up with the blades around his neck, and to top it off, has the ability to teleport. Quan Chi is very fast, so make quick decisions. Also, lay down a clone now and then. There's a 90% chance Quan Chi will run right into it. his favorite move is to run right at you and try to uppercut you, so when you see him begin to run, that's a good time to lay down a clone or start an attack. Another really dumb strat vs Quan Chi is just RH him when he runs into you, he will try to duck but will get almost always hit.

Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero Stage 8

Now, here is another break in the story, like in stage 6 when you had the option of fighting Scorpion or not, depending on what you did earlier in the game. Remember when you had the option of ripping Sareena's spine out in step 9? well, here is where it will come into play. If you didn't rip Sareena's spine out, then when there is around 10% of Quan Chi's life left, Sareena will teleport through Quan Chi's teleporter during the fight, and finish him off for you, and you'll be treated to an extra fmv clip. If you did rip her spine out, you'll have to finish Quan Chi all by yourself, and you won't be able to see the extra fmv clip. either way, Quan Chi will be knocked off the bridge, and you'll see an animation of him exploding. (see the picture)

Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero Stage 8

If you didn't rip Sareena's spine out, after defeating Quan Chi, you'll be treated to an extra fmv clip of Sareena and Sub-Zero. Again, you may not want to read this if you haven't seen the clip, so skip this step and move on to step #20. Sub-Zero asks Sareena "Why did you help me?".

Sareena pleads to Sub-Zero to take her with him, and that she's been trapped in the Netherealm, and wants to escape. The conversation is interrupted when Sareena is shot in her back by a pink laser. Sub-Zero catches Sareena before she falls off the bridge (see the picture). When Sub-Zero looks up, he sees Shinnok, with glowing pink eyes, ready for a fight.

Stage 8: Shinnok

The final boss of mk mythologies is Shinnok. Sub-Zero's mission is to defeat Shinnok and take the amulet back to rayden, or else Shinnok will have the chance of taking over the earth realm and destroying it. Sub-Zero is reality's only hope. When fighting Shinnok, he may seem impossible to beat, but there's a secret to it, just like alot of other things in Mortal Kombat Mythologies. This section will tell you step by step, how to beat Shinnok.

Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero Stage 8

You'll begin out on the same bridge that you fought quan chi on. Shinnok floats, and you can often hear him saying things like "die lin kuei warrior!", and laughs from time to time. When you get close to Shinnok, a force field develops between you and him, preventing you from hitting him at all (see the picture). If you try to hit him, the force field will knock you back, however it doesn't do any damage.

Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero Stage 8

Shinnok, like Quan Chi, also has a wide variety of varying moves. All of his moves are pink. He has a fireball similar to liu kang's that he shoots out of his hands, usually 2 at a time out of each hand. He also shoots small downward fireballs out of his eyes. Last but not least, he has a fireball that has the appearance of sheeva's fireball, that comes straight out of the amulet (see the picture).

Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero Stage 8

Your goal is to get Shinnok frozen. When you see Shinnok shooting the fireball out of his amulet, immideatly freeze him (see the picture). When he shoots this fireball, the force field dissappears for a split second, giving you a chance to freeze him. You'll likely get hit by the fireball, but it won't do a tremendous amount of damage. A good way to get him frozen is to stand in front of Shinnok and wait there, watching the amulet on his neck closely. When it flickers with pink, immideatly freeze him. He'll often hold both hands up while shooting this fireball, as well. Do not attempt to freeze him when he does his other moves, like the fireballs out of his eyes or hands. The force field remains intact during these moves. Only the amulet fireball will be effective.

Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero Stage 8

Once you've got him frozen, immideatly start running to the edge of the stage, away from Shinnok, to the left or the right, depending on which side of Shinnok you're on. At the ends of both sides of the stages are teleporters, which allow you to teleport from one side to the other. Keep running left or right until you run into this teleporter. After you hit it, you'll end up on the other side of the stage. Now, run back to Shinnok, and freeze him a couple more times right when you see him, so he doesn't get unfrozen (see the picture).

Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero Stage 8

Once you've frozen him a couple of times, run up to him and press the action button (L1/A by default). You will rip the amulet right off of Shinnok's neck. Shinnok will say "no, the amulet! noooo!", and will search his chest for it (see the picture).

Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero Stage 8

Once Shinnok finds out that Sub-Zero has stolen the amulet, he morphs into a huge hideous monster. (see the picture) you'll also see a portal open up. Now, you've got 2 choices. You can either stick it out, and try to defeat the monster, or you can jump through the portal, meet rayden on the other side, and end the game right there. If you defeat the monster (which is not an easy task at all), then you're treated to an extra fmv clip at the end of the credits which features a "behind the scenes" look at mk mythologies. If you choose to try and defeat the monster, the only move that works on it is the polar ice move, and it takes 90% of your ice meter. When hit with it, this move takes around 15% off of the monster's life bar. So, the most damage you can take off before having to wait for your ice meter to re-charge is 15%, and you don't have nearly enough time to regenerate it before it smashes you to death. However, by using the 10 urns code in the secrets section, you're able to regenerate your ice meter each time, by using an urn. So, here is what you need to do, in order:

1. Make sure you've got the urns code enabled, so that you've got all 10 urns in your inventory menu.
2. Get in the far left corner of the stage, standing right in front of the teleporter. Stay far enough away from it so that when Shinnok throws fireballs at you, you don't get knocked into it.
3. When Shinnok shoots his amulet fireball, freeze him. The impact of the fireball should knock you right into the teleporter. Run back the other way and freeze him again, taking his amulet.
4. While Shinnok is saying "no, the amulet, nooo!", access the inventory menu and use an urn to regenerate your ice meter. Press select (Z for n64) to get out of the menu, and immideatly after exiting the menu, jump back, away from the monster.
5. Wait until you see the monster begin to come on screen. Once you can see him, immideatly do the polar ice move. Right after the move has hit the monster, access the inventory menu and use another urn. Do not wait there while the monster stumbles back, just go right to the inventory menu and use another urn while he is stumbling back.
6. Once you're out of the inventory menu, walk back a ways so he doesn't have a chance of hitting you. You may need to jump back before launching your next polar ice. Watch out, because it takes about 3 seconds for Sub-Zero to get the move off, so time it so the monster won't hit you.
7. Repeat the following until he's dead. It will take about 5-6 polar ice moves to kill him.
