Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero - Guide - Stage #5
Stage 5: The Element Of Fire
maximum experience points: 3350
mission: obtain the 3 elements of fire
moves attainable: Ice Shatter
Stage 4 ends with a short fmv clip, where Sub-Zero is slowly transformed from the water stage to the fire stage. Here he is to collect the 3 elements of fire. This stage is one of the easier ones in the whole game. There are no confusing mazes, no difficult obstacles, and no hidden dangers. The only thing that may pose a threat may be the fire pits. Overall, if you've gotten this far, this stage shouldn't be too much of a challenge.
Start out by grabbing the free life (see the picture). I'm not sure why they've got this sitting right out in the open. I suppose they thought you'd be running low on lives by this point in the game, so they decided to give you a break. Keep moving to the right and out on to the bridge. You'll be confronted with a new character. This guy is fast, cheap, and dangerous, and he disappears and re-appears quickly. He'll often disappear, re-appear right in front of you, roundhouse you, then disappear again, before you can retaliate. When you're confronted with one of these characters, i find the slide/trip method the most effective. When you hear that morphing sound that they make, but you don't see them, just slide. There's a good chance you'll hit them, even if they're invisible at the moment. Then, trip him while he's still visible. You may want to slide again after that. It only takes 3 hits to kill these characters, since they're so difficult. These characters are practically impossible to freeze, unless you use a clone. Keep running right on the bridge, and you'll be confronted with another, stronger character, who is much like Jax. He's got a combo which is very dangerous, a quad slam throw, and a move where he picks you up and slams you with his fist. Watch out, these guys are also dangerous. At the end of the bridge, grab the formula and run through the corridor until you come to the fire.
The fire pits are fairly easy to pass (see the picture). Just jump over them when the fire goes down. You can even make it over one when the fire is active. Watch out, because massive life is lost if you stand in the active fire, at the rate of about 1/4 of your life per second. Standing in in-active fire is much less damaging. You'll just burn your feet. However, you don't want to stand in it too long. Jump over the active fire pit, quickly grab the urn in the middle of the 2nd fire pit, and jump over the 3rd one. Continue running right.
You'll get to a ledge with a small platform with a floating skull on it, and a large platform with a herbs on it (see the picture). Jump down on to the small platform and pull the skull by pressing the action button. You'll see another platform slowly moving up. You've got to quickly jump over 4 platforms to get to that platform before it is too far up to jump on. Quickly jump on to the large platform, grab the herbs, and jump down to the fire platform below, jump across the next 2 fire platforms as quickly as possible, and try to make it on to the rising platform. If you didn't make it, go back and pull the skull again, and do it over.
Once the platform has gone as far up as possible, you'll be confronted with a triangle key (see the picture). Grab the key. This is your first checkpoint. Jump off the platform to the right and on to the ledge. You'll be confronted with more fire pits.
This is a difficult combination of spinning spikes and fire pits. You may want to use a formula during this stage, just in case you make a mistake. Jump over the first 3 fire pits, 2 in-active and 1 active. After that, there will be another inactive fire pit, but don't jump over this one. Run across this one. The reason being is that there are some strategically placed floating spikes, and if you jump over this particular pit, pit, it will knock you right into them, causing considerable damage (see the picture).
Jump over the spikes, then over the lower set of spikes. Then, run over 2 more in-active fire pits, and jump over the next set of spikes, quickly grabbing the urn of life in-between them. Jump over the last few fire pits and continue running right.
Run across the bridge, defeating any enemies that come up to you. After crossing the bridge, continue running through the corridor. Jump over the 3 active fire pits and continue running (see the picture). Jump over the one active fire pit, defeat the enemy, and jump over the second fire pit. Continue running to the right.
You should come to a rope (see the picture). Climb down it. Go to the left, and jump over the 5 in-active fire pits, grabbing the herbs and shield on the way. You should come up to another rope. Climb down that one, and run to the right. Grab the free life, and run to the left.
At the end of the corridor should be a rectangle key (see the picture). Grab it. This is your second checkpoint. Now, go back in the opposite way in which you came. Go back to the right, up the rope, to the right, over the 5 fire pits, and up the rope again. Keep going to the right. Jump over the active fire pit, being careful not to jump off of the ledge.
Jump on to the first moving platform, then to the next 2 (see the picture). At the bottom of the 3rd platform is a free life. Grab it, then move on to the fire platform to the right. Then, jump on to the ledge above. Defeat the enemy, and keep moving to the right.
The next 4 fire pits have fire shooting from them in all directions (see the picture). This can be extremely damaging to your health if you don't do it correctly, so you may want to use one of your shields. Probably the best strategy to get by these fire pits is to wait until the first pit stops shooting fire. Wait there for about 1 second after it stops shooting, then run your fastest across the 4 pits. After passing these pits, continue moving to the right.
Run down to the end of the corridor, and you should see a rope with an invisibility (see the picture). Grab the invisibility and climb up the rope. Here is another series of fire pits and spikes. Jump over the first 2 active fire pits, then run over the in-active fire pit and jump over the set of spikes. Run over the next 2 in-active fire pits, jump over the last spike, and over the last pit. Continue running to the right. Run across the bridge, fighting any enemies that come up to you, and get back into the corridor on the right. Jump over the 3 active fire pits and keep going right.
You'll get to another ledge similar to the last one, only the platforms are placed differently in this one (see the picture). Wait until the fire has gone down in the platform below, then jump down to it. Jump to the platform on the right and grab the free life. Jump to the next 2 platforms on the right, then on to the ledge. Defeat the enemy and continue going right.
At the end of the corridor, you should see a skull (see the picture). Pull it. You'll see a platform slowly begin to go upwards. You've got to make it back in the opposite direction in which you came and get into the below corridor before the platform blocks the path. Run back to the left, jumping over the 4 platforms you previously jumped over, and on to the rising platform. Then jump into the corridor and continue going left.
Keep running left until you get to the end of the corridor. You should see some herbs, a triangle key, and a skull (see the picture). Grab the herbs and key. If it doesn't allow you to take one or both of these, that means that your inventory menu is full, and you've got to get rid of something. This is your third checkpoint. Now, pull the skull. You should see a platform slowly begin to rise again. Go back to the right, going back in the opposite direction in which you came yet again. Jump across the 5 platforms, then on to the rising platforms. Enter the upper corridor, and run to the right, fighting any enemies off that come up to you.
You should come to a locked door with 2 triangle symbols in the background (see the picture). Grab the herbs and access the inventory menu. Use the triangle key you got way back in the beginning of the stage. The door should open. Run into it to fight the final boss of stage 5.
The fire boss is another example of a boss that will be easy to defeat if you've got the basic Mortal Kombat maneuvers down. The only thing that may be difficult is that you cannot freeze this fire boss in any way, which makes sense. Use a lot of combos, slides, trips, and throws against the fire boss, and you should have no problem. However, be careful, because a lot of his moves are extremely damaging (see the picture). Usually, around 4 of his moves will kill you, so always watch out for them.
After you defeat the fire boss, you'll be treated to a really cool fmv sequence, which may be the best in the game. DO NOT read the following description if you haven't seen it yet, unless you would like to find out about it early.
Sub-Zero walks up a long set of steps to get to Shinnok's amulet. Just before he is about to grab it, Quan Chi appears and takes it from him. (see the picture). Quan Chi tells Sub-Zero of his true motives, and states that he has fooled Sub-Zero, and simply used him for retrieving the amulet for his master, Shinnok.
After a short discussion, Quan Chi disappears into a portal. A disappointed Sub-Zero makes his way back down the stairs. All of a sudden, a bolt of lightning hits the ground, and Rayden appears. He tells Sub-Zero what he has done, and says that the earth realm is in danger (see the picture). He is now reality's only hope. Someone has now got to enter the Netherrealm and follow Quan Chi to try and get the amulet back, before the earth realm is taken over by Shinnok. Since Rayden has no dominion in the Netherrealm, he creates a portal for Sub-Zero to travel through. After some directions from Rayden, he jumps in, and the stage ends. You have successfully defeated stage 5.
Once you have jumped into the portal and the fmv sequence cuts off, the game should load. If you happen to get a message as seen in the picture, your access to the next level has been denied because the difficulty level on the game is either set to "very easy" or "easy". If you do get this message, you will have to go back to the game settings and set the game difficulty to at least "medium" before you're allowed to continue. Normally, you would have to play all 5 stages over again. However, here is away around that. Go back to the game options, put the difficulty level at medium or higher, then simply put in the password for stage 5, which is jypphd. You will have to play stage 5 over again, but its better than playing them all over again.
