However one of the actors involved in the project is giving us at least some status on the series by posting pictures of him preparing for the upcoming episodes. Yes, I am talking about the Johnny Cage actor Casper Van Dien.

Casper Van Dien Training for Mortal Kombat Legacy Season 3
by Gambid on Jun 23, 2014 :: 5 Comments

A few months back Mortal Kombat: Legacy director Kevin Tancharoen informed the fans that initial talks about a third season of the web series have started. Several days ago Johnny Cage actor Casper Van Dien posted an image of him on instagram with the following comment:

Mortal Kombat Legacy Season 3 Casper Van Dien Training

We guess that the initial talks have been successful and that shooting for season 3 of Mortal Kombat: Legacy will be starting soon if not already.

There is still no official announcement regarding a third season of the searies and even director Kevin Tancharoen's Twitter account is silent on the topic. So we will have to wait.

MK Recap 3: The Future of MK: Legacy and The New Movie
by Gambid on May 30, 2014 :: 0 Comments

As we reported a few months back, Mortal Kombat: Legacy director Kevin Tancharoen informed the fans at the end of last year that he is leaving Mortal Kombat after three years spent with the franchise. Ever since that day, there has been a complete eclipse regarding the fate of the third season of Mortal Kombat: Legacy and that of the new movie. All that changed, when NerdReactor interviewed Kevin about his latest project:

With Legacy, you have approached each season differently, with the first one being an anthology of sorts.

With Legacy Season 1, it was kind of a big experiment. No one has done it before, and we didn’t know if should be an anthology or connected. We did the first one as an anthology and the second one more serialized. In the future, it will definitely be more connected and more cohesive.

We are starting to talk about it [Legacy Season 3] literally this week (knock on wood). I’m starting to talk to Warner Bros. and the video game creators, so hopefully we can see it through.

We better see it, especially after that cliffhanger in Legacy Season 2.

I know, we pissed off way too many people. Ed Boon and I are going to get together and chat and talk to Warner Bros. about figuring it out.

Is this the reason why we’re not going to see a Mortal Kombat movie from you?

We all feel right now that we have such a trajectory to the series. There are so many more stories to tell in that format.

So, there we have it. It seems that there is still hope for Season 3 of Mortal Kombat: Legacy, while the new movie seems to be on hold, at least according to its former director.

Kevin Tancharoen Leaves the Mortal Kombat Movie Reboot
by Gambid on Nov 17, 2013 :: 9 Comments

Kevin Tancharoen, the director of the Mortal Kombat: Legacy series and the Mortal Kombat Movie Reboot has announced on Twitter that he is leaving the Mortal Kombat franchise after working on it for the past 3 years:

Kevin Tancharoen rose to popularity among the Mortal Kombat fans, after accidentally releasing his Mortal Kombat short Mortal Kombat Rebirth on YouTube. The clip quickly gathered millions of views and eventually led to a job at Warner Bros, where he directed the first and the second season of Mortal Kombat: Legacy and was working on a movie reboot:

The details which led to him leaving the project are currently unknown. How this will affect the production of the new movie and the possible third season of the series is also not clear.

Legacy Season 2 Arrives Tomorrow: New Trailer & Movie Plans
by Gambid on Sep 25, 2013 :: 1 Comments

The long wait is finally over, Mortal Kombat: Legacy Season 2 arrives tomorrow, September 26th, on Machinima. And this time we won't have to wait an entire week for the next episode, as all episodes will be released together. Take a look at this brand new trailer:

Also, take a look at this interview with Mortal Kombat: Legacy director Kevin Tancharoen, in which he does not only discuss the series, but the upcoming movie as well:

HC: Does the the upcoming movie function as “Mortal Kombat Legacy 3″? Or will it start from scratch?

KT: We made a conscious decision that the movie is going to be its own universe, the reason being that we want “Legacy” to live on its own and I don’t want them to have to rely on each other because I think the world of “Legacy” still has a lot of stories to tell. They’re just two different mediums and two different styles of storytelling. I picture that there’s also a version of “Mortal Kombat” that’s a TV version or a Netflix version that lives on and is epic in its scope like “Game of Thrones.” Obviously, they’re not shy about killing their main characters, and I would have to do the same thing. “Mortal Kombat” has been around for over 20 years. The movie has to stand on its own. We want to take the mythology that everyone knows but also add to it. We’re still taking the canon, but we’re adding additional characters to still push it forward for another, who knows, 20 or 30 years. “Mortal Kombat” could be one of those games that could be around forever, and that’s how we’re treating the feature film.

Mortal Kombat Legacy Season 2 Comic-Con 2013 Panel
by Gambid on Jul 25, 2013 :: 2 Comments

This years' San Diego Comic Con has come and passed and Netherrealm Studios and Warner Bros. were once again there to promote their current and future products. One of them is of course Season 2 of the Mortal Kombat: Legacy web series, which had its own panel. Series director Kevin Tancharoen, Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon and cast members Brian Tee (Liu Kang), Casper Van Dien (Johnny Cage), Ian Anthony Dale (Scorpion) and Samantha Jo (Kitana) were all present to discuss the second season with the fans.

Part of the panel was a clip of a battle between Johnny Cage, Mileena and Kitata, that ends with a Fatality. Recording the clip was unfortunately not allowed, but you can watch the rest of the panel below:

When asked why Jeri Ryan (Sonya) is missing from the second season, Kevin Tancharoen explained that she was missing due to a scheduling conflict with the currently ongoing series, that she is shooting. He also stated that she will return as Sonya in the third season. A third season has not been announced yet, so read this as "She might return as Sonya in the third season, if there is one.".

Another highlight of the panel was when Ed Boon was asked to show everyone, why he is the voice of Scorpion and perform the legendary Get Over Here.

Here are also several pictures from the panel, including a poster for the second season:

by Gambid on Jun 19, 2013 :: 15 Comments

Things have been really quiet on the Mortal Kombat: Legacy Season 2 front for quite some time and we all have been asking ourselves what exactly has been going on with the series, as the new season was finished months ago.

A day ago Johnny Cage actor Casper Van Dien shared on Twitter that the cast and crew was invited to watch a screening of the second season. He even posted a picture from the event.

Brian Tee talks Liu Kang and Mortal Kombat: Legacy Season 2
by Gambid on May 4, 2013 :: 1 Comments

Nerd Reactor recently published in interview with Brian Tee, the actor who portrays Liu Kang in the second season of Mortal Kombat: Legacy.

During the interview, it is revealed that Liu Kang will appear in episode 1 and will be present in at least half of the episodes. In addition the beginning of May is pointed as a possible launch date for the series with the finally being aligned with this years' San Diego Comic Con (July 17 - July 21). Keep in mind that this information is not officially confirmed by the studio:

Jonathan: I believe early May is what they said. There’s no official date yet. It’s when they feel comfortable about blasting them out. I’m pretty sure they want to time the release of the finale to the start of Comic-Con.

Brian Tee also revealed that he will be attending Comic-Con to promote the show, meaning a Mortal Kombat: Legacy panel is very possible.

Mortal Kombat Legacy Season 2 Brian Tee (Liu Kang) Interview

Liu Kang is described by Brian Tee as the anti-hero of the series:

When the offer came in, I was like, “No,” but they were like, “No, read it. Read it!” I got a great buddy of mine who’s playing Scorpion in the first series and in the second series. [Ian Anthony Dale] gave me a call and he goes, “No, dude. Read it.” So I read it, and it blew my mind. It’s pretty much the Liu Kang saga where he’s the anti-hero of the series. And you see why he’s so angry and frustrated with Kung Lao and why he’s riding the lines between different worlds and realms, whether it’s Outworld or Earthrealm, no one really knows for sure where he wants to go. There’s just so much pain and agony and hatred towards all the elements, that he just wants to lash out upon others in a sense too.

Legacy Season 2 Interview + 2. Trailer, Feature Film Plans
by Gambid on Apr 8, 2013 :: 22 Comments

During this years' MIPCube Mortal Kombat: Legacy director Kevin Tancharoen and Lance Sloane, Head of Digital Programming and Development at Warner Bros. Digital Distribution participated in a discussion about the past, the present and the future of Mortal Kombat: Legacy and the next Mortal Kombat Feature Film.

Mortal Kombat Legacy Season 2 Trailer 2

Unfortunately no concrete release date has been announced for both projects but the next movie is mentioned in a conjunction with a new Mortal Kombat game, both planned for 2014. This should of course not be taken as an official announcement because it wasn't meant as one. The part of the conversation where this information comes from can be found at 19:30 and the release was mentioned with hopefully in between. Tons of additional interesting information is given and this is definitely an interview that you will not want to miss.

Make sure to watch till the end to watch a brand new Mortal Kombat: Legacy Season 2 trailer. It starts at 29:50:

The video was removed by the user.

Whether the information about a new movie and game releases in 2014 is completely accurate remains to be seen but nevertheless it is great to see some new Mortal Kombat information.

Update 04.09.2013:

The video went private only several hours upon its release. It looks like the Warner cover up machine is on full speed lately. It kind of makes us wonder what part of the discussion we weren't supposed to see. Whatever it is, it is too late because the cat is already out of the bag. Too bad for those of you who couldn't enjoy the new trailer but Machinima will probably release it too at some point.

Mortal Kombat: Legacy Season 2 TV Spot
by Gambid on Apr 1, 2013 :: 6 Comments

Machinima has become the first YouTube Network to actually run a traditional TV ad campaign. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Network has purchased an ad slot on AMC's "The Talking Dead" on Easter Sunday to promote the second season of Mortal Kombat: Legacy with the following 60 seconds TV Spot:

"We wanted to promote it in a way that would break through the fog of familiarity," said Machinima executive vp of marketing Kevin Doohan. "Connecting to a television event like The Walking Dead season finale, a show that our fans are deeply passionate about, will introduce millions more viewers to Machinima."

Some advertising for the show is a great thing considering the fact, that there is almost no new information about the series that is supposed to start airing in the very near future. Even though filming has concluded several weeks ago, neither a launch date, nor a number of episodes have been officially announced yet.

Catching Up on The MK: Legacy Season 2 Updates
by Gambid on Dec 21, 2012 :: 0 Comments

A lot of new information about the second season of Mortal Kombat: Legacy has been released, including behind the scenes images, interviews and cast members updates. So, let's begin:

Click on the image below to see all new behind the scenes images. These show Kung Lao's hat, the new Dragon Logo, Kitana's outfit and many cast and crew members, including Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa as Shang Tsung, Casper Van Dien as Johnny Cage:

Brian Tee, the actor who portrays Liu Kang in the second season of Mortal Kombat: Legacy recently spoke briefly about the series and his role:

In an interview the Shang Tsung actor Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa spoke about his return to the franchise as the evil sorcerer, his involvement in the series and the possibility to reprise his role for the upcoming Mortal Kombat feature film:

MG: How did it come again with you reprising the role of Shang Tsung in the web series “Mortal Kombat Legacy 2″?
CHT:After the first movie, all of the character had made deals for the sequel. Only two characters, Liu Kang and Kitana ended up in the movie. So it was a great disappointment, considering the success of the first one. This was just a confirmation to me for to reveal the truth of some particular people that were part of that team. It played itself out in much bigger problems. When I saw that person for one of the last times, I said “May you get what you deserve”. When that was all over with all I could do was resign to the fact that playing Shang Tsung in the first movie would have been enough. Then when I heard about the first series of “Mortal Kombat Legacy” but I was’t involved with the first season. Kevin (Tancharoen) and I connected over Twitter and offered me the role of Shang Tsung in the second sesaon. Twitter is changing politics. This guy is an amazing director and just such a humble guy. He is about to direct his direct movie for $50 million for the third “Mortal Kombat”.

MG: Any chance you will get to you play Shang Tsung again in that upcoming feature film?
CHT: The difference between the time that I did that the first movie and where my career is in now is that I have some certain standards now. But it will all be up to the studio and the producers. I let them know from the beginning, I said I wanted to do it but I had a history of not being respected. I said told them I would leave it to them to be real and see how it goes. Let’s just say I am not doing the web series for the money. But just to be a part of the web series is great. I am excited about working with Kevin and I would like to work with him even away from “Mortal Kombat”. He seems to really understand actors, which is highly rare. He has a place in Hollywood. I actually met his father back on the film “Rising Sun”. In fact, I had actually met Kevin as well, when he was 5 or 6 and he told me that he has a picture of me from back then. But for right now, I am very excited about the web series and the possibility of being in the feature.

Mortal Kombat: Legacy Season 2 Begins Filming
by Gambid on Dec 3, 2012 :: 0 Comments

If you are a fan of Mortal Kombat: Legacy then you are probably wondering, what happened with season 2, which was announced last July. Well, things are finally moving forward and we are happy to report that filming for the season began 4 days ago on November 28th. As usual the internet immediately filled with news about who is returning, who is not and who the new guys are. The list is of course far from complete at this stage:

Those we are leaving behind:
- Jeri Ryan will not be back as Sonya Blade. The actress is currently shooting season 3 of Body of Proof. No information is currently available as to how Ryan's departure will affect the character. Will Sonya be recast or written out.
- Tahmoh Penikett is not returning as Stryker. No information on the fate of the character here as well.
- Jolene Tran, who played Mileena in Season 1 will not be returning.
- Matt Mullins will not return as Johnny Cage as the studio has decided to go in a different direction and recast the role. In an interview with Shogun Gamer an obviously bummed out Mat Mullins shares some of the details regarding his departure from the series:

Matt: So then they requested footage from films that I worked on this last year which I gave them, and then they wanted me to actually read again for the second season. So I read and I auditioned for the same part as I did in season 1. Then they basically decided to go in another direction.

...

Of course I’m bummed out since I the role of Johnny Cage was something I felt I brought something unique to because the ability to make the action look good is important to Mortal Kombat, especially for a then web-based series. There’s a very quick turnaround time for someone to pull off the type of action that needs to be done and of course I felt that I brought something to the acting side as well.

Ironically my episode pretty much mirrored this entire situation that I went through. Almost identically which is pretty strange since I thought Shang Tsung was going to walk in my door after I got the news. Maybe if the film does come around things will change and I can get in that. But the production schedule is pretty short on the series so it would’ve been a nice thing to do and knock off. I was actually out of the country for six months this year working on different projects so it would’ve been nice to end the year this way, but overall this was a very good year to me.

Those, who are staying with us:
- Ian Anthony Dale is returning as Scorpion and was ready for shooting on day 1.
- Sam Tjhia who played Kitana in Season 1 posted on twitter, that she will be on the set on December 1st but without mentioning the name of the project she is working on. So, this one is still unconfirmed.

The new guys:
- Dan Southworth, the Quantum Time Force Ranger is joining the cast as a currently unknown character.
- Harry Shum Jr, best known for his portrayal of Mike Chang on the Fox television show Glee is another newcomer to the series and is playing a yet unknown character.

The second season of Mortal Kombat: Legacy was announced by series director Kevin Tancharoen in July:

Kevin Tancharoen also announced on Twitter that the second season of Mortal Kombat: Legacy will not affect the production of the new Mortal Kombat feature film. According to the latest reports the movie is also in the works and has a budget of about $40-$50 millions.

MovieWeb: Kevin Tancharoen on Mortal Kombat: Legacy
by Gambid on May 12, 2011 :: 0 Comments

MovieWeb has posted an exclusive interview with Mortal Kombat: Legacy's director Kevin Tancharoen. In this interview he talks about his plans for a the second season of the show if a green light is given by Warner Bros. He also talks about the possibility of a DVD and Blu Ray releases of the show and the huge amount of Special Features he would love to include. From the interview:

If Season 2 does come, are there any other new characters you want to introduce?

Kevin Tancharoen: I want to put up Kabal, for sure. I think he's got such a great story and he's such a cool character, and those hooks are awesome. I think the most challenging one I want to put up is Goro. I think everyone wants to see Goro, but we have to step up the game with it. In the original, they did an animatronic, which, at the time, was fantastic. Would that hold up nowadays? Absolutely not (Laughs). We've got to make that character so awesome, and that's what I'm most excited about doing, but it will also be the most challenging, because of the nature of the monster he is.

Digital Series: New Images and Interviews
by Gambid on Apr 1, 2011 :: 0 Comments

Here is a whole bunch of new information about the soon to be released Mortal Kombat Digital Series:

Two new images have been posted on Twitter by Digital Series director, Kevin Tancharoen. You can see them here: Official Images and Set Images.

In an interview for MovieWeb Mortal Kombat: Digital Series director Kevin Tancharoen shares a lot of new details with us, including small bits of information about episodes story lines that involve Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Sektor and Cyrax and his own plans and expectations about the movie part of the Mortal Kombat franchise. From the interview:

In the short, we saw Jax and Scorpion and Sonya, but in these Twitpics we've seen a few new characters. Can you talk about Blue and the other new characters we'll see?

Kevin Tancharoen: Yeah. We're really doing a lot of the iconic characters, so we have Sonya, Jax, and Kano, which is a new character in that realistic world. We're going to do an episode with Scorpion and Sub-Zero, but it takes place in ancient Japan. The whole episode is in Japanese and you see the depth of Scorpion's family and clan and how they got murdered, etc. That one is going to be very epic, because of the iconic characters. We're doing Rayden, of course, because you can't do Mortal Kombat without Rayden. We're doing Kitana and Mileena and we're also doing a really, really cool one. The one that I'm most excited about is Cyrax and Sektor.
...
In the Cyrax/Sektor episode, do those guys actually talk at all? Or is it straight-up fighting?

Kevin Tancharoen: They talk when they're in human form. Then they get changed to robots, and there's a pretty epic fight scene when they're robots. We did full motion-capture for that and we're starting to put the layers on it now, and texturing and shading it and all that good stuff, to make it look photo-real and make it look like it's gigantic. That's one of the most intense visual effects episodes, because it's robots on robots. There's a certain level of expectations you have with fighting robots, because the material is out there already. We're just trying to make them as polished as possible.

Another interview, this time with Mortal Kombat: Digital Series Stunt Coordinator Larnell Stovall has been published by Scott's Introspection Section. From the interview:

Scott Tre: You worked on Mortal Kombat: Rebirth and the upcoming Mortal Kombat Web series. Can you give us an idea of what to expect from this series as far as the fight scenes are concerned?

Larnell Stovall: Well I will say this. I’m very pleased with the fights. With anything I would have liked to have more time with the fights. Some fights had to be cut because of time. We were on a very, very tight schedule. I mean the schedule we were on literally should have been doubled. I will have to give props to the director Kevin because he performed well under that pressure. We all learned some lessons at the end of the day in terms of how to move faster, how to condense things. What’s necessary, what’s not necessary. Then the actors, they did an awesome job. Some actors had little to no time for any training. Some people had only hours to learn their choreography. Some people might have been fortunate to have a day or two. But overall I think the world is going to enjoy the vision of Mortal Kombat. I am definitely very blessed and privileged to breathe new life into that franchise so I definitely consider it to be an honor to be a choreographer of what will be the way Mortal Kombat will be seen from this point on: Gritty, real, with the fantasy elements that definitely will lead to a feature film within the next year. I think the audience is going to be very surprised. I’m very pleased with the fights, but of course as a fight choreographer you can be happy with your product but you will never reach perfection. There’s always going to be something you wish could have been stronger, faster. If you had more time it could have been covered better. That’s just an artist picking apart his art. You can be happy with the final product and pleased with it, but you always look for how it could have been done better, more efficient, more brutal. But at the end of the day as long as the fans are happy I’m good with that.

Gamasutra: Tancharoen On Mortal Kombat's Screen Rebirth
by Gambid on Jan 31, 2011 :: 0 Comments

Gamasutra.com posted today an interview with the Mortal Kombat: Digital Series director, Kevin Tancharoen. In the interview he reveals interesting details about the creation of the Mortal Kombat: Rebirth short movie and the creation of the upcoming digital series. From the interview:

“I am not the most technically savvy YouTube person,” Tancharoen tells Gamasutra in an interview. “What came out wasn’t the final product in my mind. I wasn’t done yet."

"It was still in its rough phase, but I couldn’t send a 2GB file over email, so my friend said I could create a private page on YouTube and sent it to him to review. It turns out it wasn’t that private.”
...
When he realized it was his film, his fears doubled: certain rights hadn’t been secured – including with his cast. “The actors could have quickly rebelled against me,” he says. “Thank God people liked it, because it could have gone really bad.”

Instead of rebelling, the cast rallied. White, Ryan, Ian Anthony Dale and the rest of the actors featured in the video are currently in negotiations to star in the digital shorts.

Tancharoen says there will be nine episodes in the MK live action series. Each will run for 7-10 minutes – and will explore the history of the characters in the game. (Some of the big characters, like Scorpion and Sub Zero might have their stories split into two parts.)

Mortal Komba: Rebirth To Become A Web Series
by Gambid on Jan 16, 2011 :: 15 Comments

Bloody Disgusting has reported that the Mortal Kombat: Rebirth short film is going to become a 10-episode Web-Series. Filming should begin next month. From the news:

So much for the proposed Mortal Kombat remake that Warner Bros. Pictures had hoped to get off the ground. Still, fans of the bloody battle are in for a treat as Bloody Disgusting learned that director Kevin Tancharoen - who directed the awesome online short - will return behind the camera for a 10-episode web series dedicated to the popular video game. Penned by Tancharoen, Todd Helbing, and Aaron Helbing, star Michael Jai White leads the cast as "Major Jackson 'Jax' Briggs. Shooting will take place in Vancouver this coming February. Contested expected to be cast are: Shang Tsung, Liu Kang, Sub Zero, Durak, Kabal, Kitana/Mileena and of course Scorpion. No release date is planned, and there's no word on that R-rated remake. The only plot details we could conjure up is that a few Earthlings will fight to save the planet from Shao Kahn and Shang Tsung, two Gods ruling over parallel universes, or something to that effect.

In case you haven't watched the Mortal Kombat: Rebirth short film, here it is:

Interview With MK: Rebirth's Jax' Michael Jai White
by Gambid on Jun 13, 2010 :: 0 Comments

Asylum has published an exclusive interview with actor Michael Jai White who played the role of Jackson Briggs in the recently released short Mortal Kombat: Rebirth. In the interview the actor from Spawn talks about his involvement in the first two feature films and in Mortal Kombat: Rebirth and explains how they were going to show Jax's Metal Arms in the short. Definitely a must read material for the fans of the short film. From the interview:

Finally Getting the Chance to Play Jax
I was connected to both previous "Mortal Kombat" films. I was supposed to play Jax, but had to pass because I was doing the Mike Tyson movie and "Spawn." They were shooting at the same time. My chance to finally walk in Jax's shoes in this really felt good. I'd love to do it as a movie.

Reinventing Jax for "Mortal Kombat: Rebirth"
Our natural take on it is to make it gritty and dark. Jax is still a hell of a fighter. He's still a super-badass, but he's just restrained by the letter of the law. We played with some ideas of building that up between him and Scorpion. That you're seeing two very powerful fighters, only Jax's hands are bound by the fact that he's an officer. He can't do what Scorpion can do. We have it pretty fleshed out on how we would take it.

Jax's Metal Arms
Jax still has his metal arms -- we just didn't show it there. We were playing with some ideas when my arm hits the table to have this reverberation effect.

There would be some great fights with Jax. There's so much I haven't had the chance to do. I've probably shown one-eighth of my martial arts ability on screen. I got the chance to do a little bit in "Undisputed II" and "Blood and Bone." But with something like Jax and fighting elite fighters, I'd get the chance to do a lot of things I haven't been able to do in other films. With Jax having his metal arms, I'd use a lot of Wing Chun because it relies heavily on the arms.

Will "Mortal Kombat: Rebirth" Become a Feature Film?
If Hollywood is cool enough to get on board. I think a movie of this type with a hard edge is what people want. I think this a reboot of the game itself. There was this fantasy world that people were used to, but now we're bringing it into another world. Just like how "Batman" was rebooted -- there was the fun, Joel Schumacher "Batman," and then there's the Christopher Nolan one. That same analogy works with "Mortal Kombat: Rebirth."

Another Mortal Kombat: Rebirth Interview
by Gambid on Jun 12, 2010 :: 0 Comments

Crave Online has published an exclusive interview with actor Matt Mullins who played the role of Johnny Cage in the recently released short Mortal Kombat: Rebirth. From the interview:

CraveOnline: The entire internet was a buzz about this trailer that leaked out today. Can you set the record straight and give us the scoop on what it is for?

Matt Mullins: It has been really cool to see all of the buzz about the short. The truth is, the short is about showing a vision of what the next Mortal Kombat movie can be. I think it is a very well thought out concept that pays homage to the video game and its fans. The attention to detail and the little elements added will set this film apart from all the other films.
...
CraveOnline: How did you become involved in the project?

Matt Mullins: I had known Kevin for about 5 years, but I never had a chance to work with him. A few months I got a call from Kevin about being involved in a short that he was planning to shoot. He sent me the script and I was blown away. When I sat down to meet with him, and he explained his vision, I was so excited to be involved and could not wait to start.
...
CraveOnline: How do you think this version will be better from previously released remakes?

Matt Mullins: I think this new vision has a very fresh look at the franchise and brings it the movie back to the gritty and violent nature that made Mortal Kombat game so popular. Kevin is very passionate about the project (as the rest of us are) and this short is only a taste of things to come.

Interview with MK: Rebirth Director Kevin Tancharoen
by Gambid on Jun 12, 2010 :: 0 Comments

Collider.Com has posted an exclusive interview with Mortal Kombat: Rebirth director Kevin Tancharoen in which he talks about what he would like to do in a feature film. Here are some highlights from the interview:

  • They shot the short film over two days on two RED cameras

  • Started in early April and it took 2 months to do the post production. Most people donated their time. The short was made for $7,500

  • Knew if he was going to get a chance at a genre picture, he’d have to show he could do it on his own. This is a calling card for a chance at making the next Mortal Kombat feature film and it’s his vision for how he’d do it.

  • No one at any studio knew he was doing the short

  • Oren Uziel wrote the short. He’s currently listed on IMDb to write the next Mortal Kombat movie at Warner Bros.

  • Says he wants to make a movie that balances the real world with the mysticism and the special powers. Compares it to the way Harry Potter exists in two worlds. As in there are two universes that coexist with each other.

  • Confirms “fatalities” are definitely in his movie. He wants to put them in the tournament in an “organic way”

  • Definitely would use “get over here” (the classic line from the game)

  • Michael Jai White plays Jax Briggs in the short and he’d definitely be a part of the feature.

  • Says Scorpion is the bad guy and will stay a bad guy

  • They only had 4 hours to shoot the big fight scene

Probably the most important part of the interview is where the director explains his vision and the whole part of the Mortal Kombat mythology, mysticism and Special Moves in a possible next Mortal Kombat feature film with him in the director's chair.

The excitement of the director about the project is really admirable, but I will let you read the interview on your own now.

Mortal Kombat: Rebirth
by Gambid on Jun 10, 2010 :: 8 Comments

Two days ago a mysteries 8 minutes video clip appeared on YouTube. It has the title Mortal Kombat: Rebirth. It was uploaded with absolutely no additional information and caused a tremendous confusion and excitement both, among the fans and the press. Theories started to fly around the internet that this is a trailer for the third movie or even a trailer for Mortal Kombat 9. The fact that the video shows real and well known actors only helped things get developed in this directions. The situation became a lot more clear when actress Jeri Ryan who plays FBI Agent Sonya Blade in this video posted the following messages on her Twitter page:

It's not a game trailer. Actually was made for the director to sell WB on his vision for a reimagined MK film.

More MK FAQs: I did it as a favor to a friend. No idea yet what WB's reaction to it was. And I'm not sure how you can contact WB...

So, the video is an idea of reimagining the Mortal Kombat universe for a new movie. The director, Kevin Tancharoen wanted to pitch his vision to Worner Bros. and probably get a funding for the project.

The video shows several Mortal Kombat characters, including Jackson Briggs, Scorpion, Reptile, Johnny Cage, Baraka, and Sonya Blade and mentions, shows photos of two more, Sub-Zero and Shang Tsung.

The story is set in 2010 in Deacon City and the bad guys (Reptile and Baraka) are shown as a homicidal maniacs and killers. They, just like all other characters are humans and poses absolutely no extraordinary powers.

But, enough talking, lets see the video:

Here is some cast and crew information:
Director: Kevin Tancharoen
Jackson Briggs: Michael Jai White
Scorpion: Ian Anthony Dale
Reptile: ???
Johnny Cage: Matt Mullins
Baraka: Lateef Crowder
Sonya Blade: Jeri Ryan

We also made a few screencaptures from the Full HD version of the video to show you all the characters that appeared in this video.
