Games Convention 2008 - Reviews - Hands-On

Mortal Kombat VS. DC Universe
Hands-On
Written August 23rd
by Gambid

Part 1 - Part 2
Part 3 - Part 4

The Graphics

The graphics are just the right once. The fighters are detailed. The effects of the special moves look amazing. Sub-Zero's Ice, Entering Rage Mode, Shang Tsung's Teleport, Flash's moves are a really great examples of a well done job. The animation is fluent and vivid. The animation of every characters corresponds to their personality. Kitana is calm and graceful character, while the Joker is... a... maniac. And you can see this from their animation very well. You can also see cuts and bruises pretty clear this time. Even the clothes get ripped during battle. Midway didn't overdone the graphics which in this case turned out to be a good thing. The graphics are just the right onces and deliver an amazing experience.

The only thing I did not like that much was the glowing eyes, when a fighter performs a finishing move. I really don't see the reason for this one.

Story Mode

Story mode wasn't present in this demo version, so there isn't really much to say about it here. As Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon described it to me, it will be nothing like Konquest Mode from Armageddon or from Deception. It will be more like an interactive movie. What exactly this means, remains to be seen in the near future.

With this our small hands-on review is nearing its end. I am glad that you decided to read it until the end.

In general, Mortal Kombat VS. DC Universe looks like it is going to be an amazing new entry in the Mortal Kombat series. The game certainly has a great potential and it is up to the team to show all of it at the end. It has the right and most popular characters, the graphics, the dark atmosphere and just everything you will expect from a Mortal Kombat game.
