Games Convention 2008 - Reviews - Hands-On

Mortal Kombat VS. DC Universe
Hands-On
Written August 23rd
by Gambid

Part 1 - Part 2
Part 3 - Part 4

The Arenas

Available in the Games Convention demo were the Netherrealm (Hell), Metropolis, The Graveyard and The Batcave. All of them had some sort of transition. There was Free Fall Kombat on all of them except Metropolis, where you get Test Your Might. The arenas look good and help setting up the right mood for the game. The Stage Fatalities and the Death Traps will for sure be missed this time. But let hope for a glory return in Mortal Kombat 9. There isn't really much I can say here, because I was more focused on the characters.

The Gameplay

The game is fast and more responsive then previous Mortal Kombat games. The transition from one kombat mode to a different one is done great, no delay and everything feels as one whole thing. Klose Kombat and Free Fall Kombat are a nice new additions to it. The Rage mode was the new addition in this version of the game. Hector Sanchez explained it really great in our interview, so I will just quote him:

Hector Sanchez: We added Joker and Kitana as playable characters. Also we have added a „Rage“ mode. Basically it's a new mode that we kind of get in there. We have a Rage meter build into the game now. Basically it gets triggered after you have taken a lot of damage or you performed a lot of special moves and ones it's build up you kind of trigger it and you kind of go into this kind of mode where you are not really invincible but you are very powerful. Your attacks deal out 50% more damage, they are unblockable, if you are blocking you are still going to take damage no matter what melee or projectile attack. And also the reaction animations a kind of cut off. So, you can still be hitting me now just barrow through it and keep attacking me. So that are the major changes that we have.

The developers are trying their best to balance the game and a progress has already been made with The Flash and Superman, who were very cheap before. I cannot say this for Superman but even now The Flash is pretty powerful. So in terms of balance, work is still needed.

In terms of controlling the characters, the Play Station 3 joypad is easier to use. At least for the 2D movements. It could have just been me and the fact that I am not used to the Xbox 360 controller. But almost every time I tried to perform a special move, my fighter jumped. May be it just takes longer to get used to the controller, I played the Xbox 360 for not more than 20-30 minutes.
