- Mortal Kombat On Planet Of The Road Rovers
Episode One: "Mountain of the Delphi" - Part II
In the meantime, Tamarain and the three
fugitives approach the cave entrance leading to the Great Hall in the
mountains.
LIU KANG: Wow, two hundred feet of sheer cliff behind us, straight down.
JOHNNY CAGE: Yeah, and only one footpath leading up here. With enough
food, water and ammunition this place could be held indefinitely.
TAMARAIN: Come, we have no time to lose. My people are waiting to meet
you, visitors from the stars.
Entering the caves single file they walk down a long twisting tunnel.
Rounding one last corner they stop suddenly and gaze in amazement at the
sight before them.
LIU KANG: <whistles> Looks like a cathedral.
JOHNNY CAGE: No wonder they call it the Great Hall.
COLLEEN: And look there, relics of an ancient civilization. A treasure
house of archaeological significence, I've just struck the mother lode
of all discoveries...I'm rich! <cannot believe her good luck>
JOHNNY CAGE: Look here, Liu. Steel rails and cobblestones.
LIU KANG: And that thing sticking up like a stalagmite, it's a steeple,
the top of an old church.
JOHNNY CAGE: Are you thinking what I'm thinking?
LIU KANG: Way ahead of you, movie-star. This mountain stands where once
a great city stood.
COLLEEN: And the Delphi, this handful of primitive humans must be the
ancestors of the people of that city.
LIU KANG: Clinging to the mountain like a security blanket.
JOHNNY CAGE: Look, Tamarain's getting on that alter. He's gonna speak.
The villager leader stood on a raised dais-like platform before his
people and began to speak, his voice booming off the walls and ceilings
of the cavern like the almighty.
TAMARAIN: Hear me, my people! This day has come upon us three strangers
as foretold in the Book of Wonders.
PEOPLE: Aaaamen!
TAMARAIN: This day is a day of glory, of deliverance from slavery.
PEOPLE: Aaaamen!
JOHNNY CAGE: What the heck? The people, they're not mute. They're
answering Tamarain like a congregation in a church.
TAMARAIN: As it is written in the ancient scrolls of the Delphi...when
in the course.
PEOPLE: When in the course...
TAMARAIN: Of human events...
PEOPLE: Of human events...
TAMARAIN: It becomes necessary...
PEOPLE: It becomes necessary...
JOHNNY CAGE: Good grief, Kang, can you make any sense of those words?
LIU KANG: No way.
At that moment a hooded monk rushes into the chamber, fear etched on his
face as he addresses his leader.
SERVANT: My lord, the Rovers are coming! A whole army led by General
Hunter.
TAMARAIN: Prepare all defenses, <looks around> Graylok, where's my son?!
Suddenly a secret stone door swings open and Graylok enters the Great
Hall to face his father.
GRAYLOK: There is only one defense, Tamarain. Turn the strangers over to
General Hunter immediately.
Shocked, frightened looks cross the faces of Johnny, Liu and Colleen as
they realize the CnWo are about to capture them any minute now. How much
longer can they endure fleeing the empire before they are defeated in
the end, they wonder? Even Tamarain seems taken aback by his son's words
but quickly recovers.
TAMARAIN: What are you saying, betray our friends? Never! The gods have
chosen them to lead us to freedom and victory over the New World Order
once and for all.
LIU KANG: Now see here...<starts to protest>
JOHNNY CAGE: We were not sent by the gods, why would we? <confused>
GRAYLOK: <ignores them> He has given his word of honor he will leave us
in peace.
TAMARAIN: <shocked> You have spoken to him?
GRAYLOK: Yes, dad. While you were playing soldier I acted on my own
will. He waits at the foot of the mountain for your decision.
TAMARAIN: Fool! <angry> General Hunter does not keep his word!
Just then came the sound of bullets bouncing off the stone walls like
hailstones, catching everybody off-guard.
TAMARAIN: There is your answer, he followed you to the secret entrance.
GRAYLOK: Then, you refuse?
TAMARAIN: I refuse! I will not allow these visitors from the stars to be
exterminated by the terrorist forces of the empire.
GRAYLOK: So be it, father. I am sorry to say this...but I'm taking
command at the moment, you are through.
Turning to the open door behind him, Graylok shouts to the Rovers
waiting below.
GRAYLOK: Guards, up here! The fugitives are up here, come get them!
In a fury, Tamarain siezes an ancient pistol and yells "Stupid, foolish
child. I'll teach you to insult or threaten your own father!" and fires
a single shot. The bullet pierces Graylok's head and he stares at his
father in shock and disbelief before the life drains from his body and
he topples lifeless to the floor, dead. Then turning to the fugitives,
Tamarain shouts.
TAMARAIN: No time, my friends. Quickly, follow me!
Leading them to a secret door behind the alter, he points to a stairway
carved out of stone.
TAMARAIN: Follow those stairs to the top of the mountain. Go down the
other side and you'll find safety in the forest beyond.
JOHNNY CAGE: Aren't you coming with us?
TAMARAIN: Sorry, but it is forbidden for any Delphi to approach the top
of the mountain, home of Ytrebil.
JOHNNY CAGE: <suprised> Ytrebil? Who's he?
TAMARAIN: God of the mountain, protector of the Delphi. My trust is in
him. It is written in the time of our greatest danger, Ytrebil will cast
down his anger upon thy enemies and they will all be destroyed. Go, now,
and god be with you on your quest, friends. <bows in farewell then turns
away>
With that the three friends begin their climb upwards towards the light
at the far end until emerging into the light at the top of the mountain
with the wind whistling around them they peer cautiously over the edge.
Far below, Hunter flushed with a sense of victory shouts instructions to
his officers.
HUNTER: Destroy the Delphi to the last man, woman and child, no
survivors. I want those fugitives alive so I can kill them myself!
LIU KANG: Murdering mutt! How dare he threaten to harm innocent people
like that?!
JOHNNY CAGE: He's worse than Adolf Hitler or Saddam Hussein or Osama Bin
Laden put together.
COLLEEN: <gets their attentions> Liu, Johnny, look!
LIU KANG: What is it, collie?
COLLEEN: Over there, that metal gleaming in the sun. It must be...
At that moment gunshots ricochet off the outcroppings like angry hornets
or yellowjackets buzzing through the air around the chosen one, movie
stuntman and collie martial artist.
LIU KANG: Uh-oh, they've spotted us. Let's get out of here.
JOHNNY CAGE: Down the other side?
LIU KANG: Wait a minute, Cage, look at this!
The grand champion of Mortal Kombat notices a large golden object
gleaming in the sunlight and he, Cage and Colleen approach carefully to
investigate. The object turns out to be a large bell connected by its
supports, a crack running down one side.
JOHNNY CAGE: It's a huge, ancient bell.
COLLEEN: Blimey, I would estimate its weight to be about 2,000lbs with a
diameter of 12 feet.
JOHNNY CAGE: There seems to be some kind of inscription around the rim,
can't make it out though...looks like...
Suddenly a violent shudder rumbles the ground beneath their feet and the
friends start to panic.
LIU KANG: What's that?
COLLEEN: The mountain is shaking! All that gunfire!
LIU KANG: Yeah, might start an earthquake or something if we don't move
fast.
JOHNNY CAGE: <shouts> Liu, I got it!
LIU KANG: What on earth, Cage?
JOHNNY CAGE: Listen! <begins to translate inscription amid the rumbling>
Proclaim liberty, Liu, don't you get it? The god of the mountain,
Ytrebil is...
Suddenly the bell emits a loud "BOOOOOOONG!" noise making both humans
and canosapien cover their ears with hands and grimace, wince in pain
from the vibration sound until it fades away. At that moment the entire
mountain seems to collapse, turning into a rockslide!
LIU KANG: Colleen, Johnny, quick! Follow me!
With the mountain crumbling away almost beneath their feet, they race
down the side reaching the safety of the forest just as the proud home
of the Delphi with a final convulsive roar dissolves into a massive heap
of rubble, buried beneath a towering cloud of dust.
JOHNNY CAGE: Holy bleep-bleep!
LIU KANG: Are you sure we just didn't dream there was a mountain there a
few minutes ago?
JOHNNY CAGE: If it was, it was one dream that will never die.
COLLEEN: You speak in riddles. All I know is the ruins of an ancient
city, the richest archaeological treasures I've ever seen may be lost
for all time. <looks sad and defeated>
JOHNNY CAGE: All I know is that a brave man and his people died today.
Never knowing their god of the mountain, silenced over 2000 years could
in fact be the voice of the Liberty Bell, of ancient Philadelphia.
