Fan Fiction - The Lin Kuei Chronicles (Part One)
Chapter Two - The Lin Kuei Chronicles

I sit next to a roaring fire, deep under the Academy. Scattered around me are all of the books in the library, and I pour over them all, searching for the answer to my question. I lift one up from the floor and blow the dust off it’s cover. The title is revealed. It is written in gold lettering, block writing. It reads: THE LIN KUEI CHRONICLES. I gently open the book and flip to the first page.

THE JOURNALS AND EXPLOITS OF SUB-ZERO.

Summer 24
I woke fast this morning. The blades of grass dripped with dew, and my face was moist with sweat. I stood, but the girl was not there. I cursed to myself, but then I noticed a small set of tracks. Female tracks.

I know this part already. I skim the rest of the page, but he does not speak of the dream. The bell clangs once. I look out the window, and realize that much time has passed. I must get to bed. I lay the book down on the floor where it was, and begin to leave.
I stop. I turn and look at the book. On second thought, I decide to take it with me.

Sub-Zero stared at Frost’s body. She slept across from him, shivering, the fire giving off little warmth. If she had what Sub-Zero had, his power, then she would never get warm. Still, he removed his coat and stood. He walked over to her and crouched, his back to the flames. Leaning over, he placed the coat across her waist, covering up her legs and torso. She whispered something quietly in her sleep, but did not wake.
Sub-Zero walked outside the cave and surveyed this unfamiliar territory. It was wet from the rain, and mud caked the ground. The trees and bushes were soaked. It reminded him of the rain forests in China. He could even almost hear a panda in the night air.
That was no panda.

It is almost three. I am sitting up in my bed, a candle in one hand and the book in the other. I have no idea what the noise could have been, it is in none of the textbooks that I have ever read. I flip the page.

Sub-Zero lifted his head and looked behind him. A small twig cracked, and he whirled around in the opposite direction. He wondered if it was Scorpion, if maybe he had survived. maybe his dream had not been a forecast, just a dream. Lightning flashed, and thunder sounded in the distance. The wind picked up, and Sub-Zero’s clothes whipped against his skin. Water from the trees dripped down into the ninja’s face. Thunder sounded again, and another burst of lighting accompanied it. The wind howled through the forest, and Sub-Zero, who stood atop a small rise in a relatively open wooded area, was almost knocked off his feet.
“Show yourself!” shouted the ninja defiantly. The wind blew harder, and this time Sub-Zero was knocked off his feet. But he didn’t hit the ground. Instead, he was lifted into the air and thrown against a tree. He coughed, and a small icy drop of blood fell onto the ground. The wind threw him again, this time he landed on a top branch of a huge bamboo tree. He struggled to stay on, but slipped and almost fell to his death. He gripped the branch at the last second and was able to pull himself up.
He stood. Across from him, on the very tip of the large branch, was a man in a white robe. He held a long wooden staff and had his white hair in a single ponytail. He was floating. Sub-Zero did not know who he was, but he could see his eyes. And that was all he needed to see to understand. Grabbing a small twig from the trunk of the tree, he froze the water that surrounded it to make himself a staff of ice.
The man in white bowed. Sub-Zero did the same. A voice boomed over the entire sky, and with it came a flash of lightning.
“FIGHT!”
